The Q & A Collab

Something has been lacking in previous collabs!

We have done a great job recording our takes, and with some “mixing magic” we have weaved them together into a final song/ medley.

But I have always wanted to do a collab where we actually write something together. It struck me that the easiest way to do this, is probably by using the so called “call and response” technique. This simply means student A records a first lick and then student B records a second lick after the first lick - and there we have our call and response, or “Q & A”.

For this collab I suggest a really simple backing track in E minor pentatonic:

Attached File  Q_n_A_GMC_collab.mp3 ( 1.05MB ) Number of downloads: 732

As you can hear it's just just a simple rhythm guitar. This will allow us to take the track in any direction we want, depending on the contributions we get.

The track has a very bluesy vibe, but rock licks will work as well. It’s taken from Stephane’s Bottleneck Blues Lesson.

I will be taking part in the Q&A as well - and I am really looking forward to it! biggrin.gif

So how do we kick this off? Record a first lick and upload it here, the idea is then for someone else to record over the file you uploaded. All instruments are welcome (especially guitar! wink.gif )

I will gradually be completing the final track, and everybody will get to follow the development of the end product in this thread.

As soon as we have started getting student takes - we'll also analyse how to approach the backing and the “call and response" technique.

Does anybody want to start this off? cool.gif

Info:

* backing track is in 84 bpm
* no deadline, we’ll just keep going until we have a finished track
* please also send me the "guitar only" file, starting from point 0, without any effects (preferably a wav file)
* Suggested scale:

RESULTS / FINAL MIX

Ok my friends - I don't think anyone will object when I say this is probably the most unpredictable collab we have ever done.

And that is the nature of Q & A - you never know what your music pal / band mate will answer. The conversation can land anywhere.

And so it it did.

Ladies & Gentlemen - may I introduce, for the first time ever - 12-bar blues and DEATH REGGAE in the same song:

Some credit clarifications

00:03 Todd Simpson trading lines with my vocals
01:07 Short reply by Phil
02:55 Laurent (Fzalfa) is back some a hi gain lead, Phil added atmospheri, sustained whammy notes during his take
03:22 Chris S hi gain lead

The very last take (04:16) is by James who found the collab on facebook (he is not a member here - yet wink.gif )

Other credits are sung (or rather barked wink.gif ) by me throughout the track.

Thank you so much, this collab was a blast for me! biggrin.gif

This could become an epic 10 minute Red House style jam wink.gif

I'm in Spain until Saturday, I've listened to the backing, have some ideas in my head but whether I can get them into my fingers is another thing rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

Great one Kris smile.gif cool.gif

Can you please send me the the guitar only file for both takes (starting from point 0, without any effects, preferably a wav file.) I think there is some excellent stuff in both of them.

Yes! But my idea is to develop the backing track gradually - so maybe we will end up with completely replacing the original backing track with drums and other instruments.

Here is the longer version:
