Hey Chris,

Here are your first two assignments for June, enjoy!

1st assignment :
Theory and harmony reading with extra questions!

- I would like you to read my posts from links provided below.
- Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.
- Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc).
- Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major as well as in F and G major scales.

2nd assignment :
Theory and Harmony essay

This assignment is sort of like an essay or written theory behind your current level of knowledge. This will help me totally understand where you at right now. I will give you couple of topics from which you can choose one (or more if you want to!) and write me as many things as possible about it. Here are the topics for your 2nd assignment :

1) Tell me everything you know about major scale. Construction, intervals, harmony and everything else you feel I need to know.
2) Tell me everything you know about cadences in major scale and its modes. Use C major scale for explanations.
3) Tell me everything you know about major scale modes?
4) Tell me everything you know about modal harmony?
5) Tell me everything you know about pentatonic scales?
6) Tell me everything you know about chord tone and tension relationship with harmony ?
7) Tell me everything you know about natural/harmonic/melodic minor scale harmony?
8) Tell me everything you know about natural/harmonic/melodic minor modes and harmony?

Remember, pick one (or more if you can do it by deadline) and write me as much as possible on given subject. I want to read and understand how you approach and understand given material.
The deadline for these assignments is 19th of June.

I am not sure about min7b5 however Is its formula something like 1 3b 5b 7b?
Μoreover, I asked you how we type dominant and you said either dom7 or just 7 but is one of them more preferable?

Great work Chris!

You should use just 7 for dominant 7th. When it comes to minor7b5 chord you are right, numbering formula is 1 b3 b5 b7!

Hey Pedja Here is the 2nd assignment.

I will leave blank the questions that I wont answer.Also,Im not sure about what I will write because of my limited theory so please correct me wherever Im wrong.

1)Tell me everything you know about major scale. Construction, intervals, harmony and everything else you feel I need to know.


Major scale is a 7 note scale

Construction:We can construct a scale using this formula 2212221

Example:Say we want to construct a scale using C as the root.It would be:

C+2 semitones=D
D+2 semitones=E
E+1 semitone =F
F+2 semitones=G
G+2 semitones=A
A+2 semitones=B
B+1 semitone =C


So there we have the scale C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C which is called the C Major Scale.We can construct a variety of other major scales using the same process.

Intervals:According to the same formula we can pretty much tell which are the intervals of a major scale
So it would be:

0 semitones-Perfect Unison
2 semitones-Major 2nd
4 semitones-Major 3rd
5 semitones-Perfect 4th
7 semitones-Perfect 5th
9 semitones-Major 6th
11semitones-Major 7th
12semitones-Perfect Octave

Harmony:We can create harmony using 2 or more notes.As far as major scales are concerned we use the I III and V scale degrees of a major scale to achieve harmony.

So if we want to create harmony using the C Major Scale we would take these notes of the scale (C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C).Since the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the scale are C,E,G we can create a chord using these notes.This procedure applies to all major scales.Major chords are on scale degrees I,IV,V of the major scale



3)Tell me everything you know about major scale modes?

Modes are scales within scales or to be more precise they are scales that are taken from a major scale.Since there are 7 notes within a scale there are 7 kinds of modes all in all listen in order:

Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian
and Ionian again


If we want to construct a mode scale we firstly take a major scale.We will take the C Major Scale.(C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C)


So each note corresponds to a mode and all the notes of each mode scale are the same to the major one we used to construct the mode scale


C Ionian (C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C)
D Dorian (D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D)
E Phrygian (E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E)
F Lydian (F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F)
G Mixolydian (G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G)
A Aeolian (A,B,c,D,E,F,G,A)
B Locrian (B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B )
C Ionian (C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C)


So if they have the same notes with the corresponding major scale why are we using them? This is a question I dont know how to answer but I think it has something to do with the different root,with the difference of the chords we can produce
from each of them and the feeling each one gives

5)Tell me everything you know about pentatonic scales?
Pentatonic scales are scales that ,in contrast to most scales that have 7 notes, have 5 notes! (thats why the penta- which I think comes from the Greek word pente=πέντε=5)


The pentatonic scale is divided to Minor and Major pentatonic scales which we can construct using a different formula


Minor Pentatonic Scale:

Say we want to construct the A Minor Pentatonic scale.So we take the A note as our root and use this formula 32232
So it would be:

A+3 semitones=C
C+2 semitones=D
D+2 semitones=E
E+3 semitones=G
G+2 semitones=A

So the A Minor Pentatonic scale would be (A,C,D,E,G,A)We can construct multiple Minor Pentatonic scales using the exact same process.
Furthermore,relative to the minor pentatonic scale is the blues scale.The only difference between these two is that the blues scale has one extra note.So if we want to construct it we would use this formula. 321132



A +3 semitones=C
C +2 semitones=D
D +1 semitones=Eb
Eb+1 semitone =E
E +3 semitones=G
G +2 semitones=A

So the A Minor Blues Scale would be A,C,D,Eb,E,G,A.So the only difference is the extra note -Eb- which is also called blue note.


Major Pentatonic Scale:

We construct a major pentatonic scale using the same concept but a different formula which is 22323
So the A Major Pentatonic Scale would be:


A +2 semitones=B
B +2 semitones=C#
C#+3 semitones=E
E +2 semitones=F#
F#+3 semitones=A

So the A Major Pentatonic Scale would be A,B,C#,E,F#,A

That's it

As you may have noticed Im pretty much a formula guy and dont really know much
Anyway I tried pretty hard and listed most of my knowledge above so you should probably by now know what I need to work on

Triads in a song context

- Check out Triads in a song context HERE
- Use backing track provided to record it.
- Upload video on Youtube and embed it here.
- Submit it for REC grading and in this thread here.

4th assignment :
Superimposing with minor pentatonics + improvising

- Read Superimposing with Minor Pentatonics post HERE
- After reading the whole thing with related link posts, think about choosing one chord and one approach you will use for recording!
- After you have chosen your approach, record a backing track with that chord and on top of that record yourself soloing with 1 or all 3 minor pentatonics corresponding with that mode!
- Post your work in this thread.

Let me give you an example here. Lets say that you have chosen A minor as your chord. Now you also chose A minor to be treated as II (Dorian sounding). In that case you should play minor pentatonics from G major scale ( A , B and E minor pentatonics) over A min chord in the background. 4th assignment asks you only to pick 1 but it also allows you to use all 3 pentatonics if you want to.
Backing track doesn't have to be anything fancy for this purpose. Just guitar playing the chord will do, if you want to add bass and drums to that to make it sound tighter go ahead!

Deadline for both assignments is 30th of June.

Ok so here is the 3rd assignment




As you may have already noticed Ive done too many mistakes and firstly I was to redo the video but some unexpected things occured which prevented me of doing so.The same <things> are the reasons I havent done the 4th assignment and that I wont be participating in the MTP the following two months.Ive notified Chris Evans about this but I havent received a response so I guess its okay.

Im sorry things had to turn like this... I would really,REALLY want to continue the MTP but these circumstances in the future will lead to the absence of my computer and probably my guitar.
