I just read that it's a really bad habit to hold your hand as a fist when playing with pick...
Is this true? because i always hold my hand as a fist when playing
It's not a bad habit unless you stiffen your hand this way. In general you can hold it anyway you like it - but it must be relaxed as possible. This is what's important.
Ivan has the right answer there (as always... ). There was a short period in my playing when i practiced speedpicking with all my fingers bent, but since it wasn't that comfortable and i always started to clench my fist, now I'm playing with an open hand, even resting my right pinky on the guitar.
However the main purpose is to remain relaxed with your picking hand
Seems like i have nothing to worry about then, as my hand is always relaxed when i play. Thanks for the fast answers
I always play like that, except for palmmuting some times. Just look at David or John Petrucci. Paul Gilbert & Buckethead has something in between, but it's surely not a bad habit as long as you can stay relaxed and it feels good.
No problem mate, glad to help.
Along these same lines - What about anchoring your pinky on the pickguard below the strings with your strumming hand, to help give you a frame of reference to the strings. I do this from time to time on slower paggages(Not all the time - depends on the passage) and it helps with my picking accuracy. But I have heard some teachers say never do it, and others say its fine. Is this one of those things that can go either way as well?

I never really think of how i hold my hands when playing but as long as i can keep them relaxed it feels good.....
