GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Acceleration Lesson or video PLEASE

Posted by: leedbreak Feb 27 2007, 01:58 AM

PLEASE HELP WITH THIS ONE.
The best way I can describe the problem is going from walking to running.
If you look at speed picking as running and decent picking as walking. Then, you can only walk so fast before you have change the type of step you are taking or running is impossible. My picking is the same way I can pick faster now than ever, but I appear to have hit a road block that keeps me from going any faster. Just like speed walking. But it seems I can jump higher in speed and do pretty good. It is just like watching someone walk as fast as the can and they jump to a slightly different type of step in order to achieve running.
I would like to see a video lesson about how to accelerate.
I would just like to see one of you do it, I know you can.
Like play a 2 or 3 string pattern over and over from very slow to as fast as you can and back again to very slow. Trying to cover many tempos as you go.
All tips are welcome
Thanks

A "stamina" lesson is a great topic - once you have gotten to the stage where you are physically able of doing things fast - you also need to have control of your "speed bursts" . That's where stamina comes in!

In the example I gave above, I guess they guy that changes his step so he can start running really just switched to economy walking, and has a lot to learn before he is truly running, Geees that was deep, LLLLLLLOL

one tip i want to add witch helped for me

it's a tip from petrucci's instructional dvd

say you playing this pattern on the G string. 2,4,5 as tripplets. let's say for instance you can play this at 180 bpm at the metronome (i can't). Do the excersise for like a minute at this speed than slow it really down to like 100 or 90 for about 30 sec( don't have to lower the metronome and raise it each time, just slow the speed real down) then go back to 180 for about 20 to 30 secs and return to slow. you don't have to stick to the seconds i told, just make sure you do it as fast as you can and then go back to real slow. this has already worked great for me. changing the tempo constantly wil increase stamina a lot

good luck

That makes a lot of sense - give your muscles time to recover a little in between speed runs I guess - thanks for the tip I'll give it a go smile.gif when I get back from my business trip this week and can play my guitar again sad.gif

I know what the original poster means....

... the best way I can describe it is in where the motion comes from:

"jogging" for me is picking with movement in the wrist
'running" is picking with a locked wrist

once I could do the movement with the wrist locked - and under control - my speed really took off...

Yes locking it is the typical shred way of doing it. Now if you have som extra practice years and want god-like speedpicking tone you can learn how to do it with the wrist - like Eric Johnson, very few guitarist today can pull that off however...! smile.gif

I'd love a stamina lesson.
Yea, I speed pick with my elbow too, I try not to but it's hard.

Well - i already said in another topic that a lesson on Speedpicking is coming this Monday and i'll particulary stop at right hand to clear it for you smile.gif

"jogging" for me is picking with movement in the wrist
"running" is picking with a locked wrist

-- this is a 90% good answer! Rusty Cooley picks that way and i've been playing like that for a long time now - and as i sad we'll talk about it in the next speedpicking lesson.
