Would you go for a 6 string or go all out and get 7 string?

If you're a 7 string player no point in getting a 6 string, and the other way round. I'm not planning on playing super low stuff, so no need for additonal string.

I play an 8 string and own a 7 string as well, but I would never consider them shred guitars just because of the lower strings. If I wanted a shred guitar I'd probably stick to a 6 string.

As a 6 string guitar user, I do like the extended scale options on 7 strings. The wider neck does need some practice to get used to but specially when writing your own solos its quickly noticed one doesn't change left hand positions as much (jumping up and down the neck) so there is a comfort element to it when in serious use.

If your left hand thumb doesn't use much pressure to the neck and not positioned on the top shoulder of the neck (rather than center) with regular 6 string then there is a good chance you'll get used to it fast and play as fast.

To note this is like a second or third guitar right? cause if only one guitar then there is more to consider...

It's better to have it and not need it , than to need it and not have it .I am only 5'6' so when I switched to a seven string 27 scale guitar , I was not sure how it would work. The extra room I get between frets and the thicker neck ended up being ,by far, the most comfortable guitar, for me, to the point that I can't ( don't want to ) play my other guitars

Per usual, it depends on bit on whose doing the playing. Size of their hands, experience etc. 7 string guitars have a big wider neck just because there are more strings to accommodate. If you have smaller hands, 7 string guitars can require a bit more work. If you have larger hands, it's usually less of an issue.

For "pure shred" I still reach for my RG560 6 string just because the neck is paper thin and it's still the fastest playing guitar I"ve got. Not to say it's impossible to shred on a 7 it's very possible smile.gif Just a pinch more work.

I have not yet felt the need for 7 strings, though I am sure the day will come. It seems I can get everything out of a 6 string (heavy riffs, long runs etc).
