The wider neck does need some practice to get used to but specially when writing your own solos its quickly noticed one doesn't change left hand positions as much (jumping up and down the neck) so there is a comfort element to it when in serious use. If your left hand thumb doesn't use much pressure to the neck and not positioned on the top shoulder of the neck (rather than center) with regular 6 string then there is a good chance you'll get used to it fast and play as fast. Size of their hands, experience etc. 7 string guitars have a big wider neck just because there are more strings to accommodate. If you have smaller hands, 7 string guitars can require a bit more work. If you have larger hands, it's usually less of an issue. For "pure shred" I still reach for my RG560 6 string just because the neck is paper thin and it's still the fastest playing guitar I"ve got.
