Announcement : Slight Change To Swearing Guidelines

Dear all, this will not affect 99% of you - I have just amended the guidelines to specifically disallow starred out expletives, effective immediately.

The reasons for this, as for all curbs on swearing, are to keep the forum pleasant overall and also habitable for our younger members - starred out expletives whilst meeting the letter of the guidelines don't really reflect the spirit behind it so we have just tightened up on this a little.

We will continue to moderate these kind of comments as for all other swearing - by edits in the first instance, and warnings for repeat offenders.

As I said, this won't even affect 99% of you as you are quite the politest bunch of people I have ever dealt with!

Andrew - on behalf of the moderating team.

Fair enough. I say all or nothing, if you are to allow anything it should all be allowed. I think we can all get by just fine without swearing.

I just have to copy a rule from a forum I frequent:

"2. No mean-spirited name-calling. This happens more in WEG, but if I see it I'll edit your posts and turn "You [bad word] moron" into "You fudge-loving bunny-rabbit" in an instant."

tongue.gif

EDIT: Edited by myself for language in quote... (DOH!)

Yeah, there's a number of forums that automatically change certain words to other words, it can be kind of funny smile.gif

I've always been against prohibition or deprecation of swearing because I think that they add a personal flavour to ones speech or written text. I also think that a kid whos not mature enough to see a couple of bad words every now and then should be kept away from the internet or at least under parental guidance. Though I'd like to add that this doesn't mean that a post containing mostly swearing should be allowed. A post without content is worthless, filled with bad words or not. I'd also like to add that I personally believe that one should only use words when/where they add something, like enhancing something. i.e. the use of a swear word is much better used in holy s*** I almost cut myself than; i don't really f***** like PRS, I think c*** esp is much better. That last one is imho actually rude and offensive which, I'm against of course.

I can see that it would be very hard to draw a good line that would allow swearing in an enhancing texture while disallowing cursing. And now that these are the guidelines I will of course follow them.

Just my point of view.

This is a good initiative. Starred out stuff should be banned. Things can always be said in a polite manner. smile.gif

I didn't understand that.
Do you mean like in replacing "u" with an "*" in a four letter word?
If I got it right I fully agree, there is no difference. It's still a foul word.

I do think it is wise with the youngsters around. Plus swearing isn't really necessary unless you drop an anvil on your toe.

Yeah, that what you said is not ok.

Disguising bad language by starring out **** is not ok either since the reader can interpret what's supposed to be there... and as always, it's the tought that counts wink.gif

The way I feel about it, is that cursing is OK, the problem is when people use it to offend others, and that is when it is not OK, but I agree that it is difficult to draw the line so it is probably better to ban it completely

Excellent rule - love it! Nothing turns me off more than seeing sentences with bad words.

I would never have kept interest in our community if it weren't for the fantastic atmosphere we have got - thanks so much Andrew and the moderator team for your hard work in maintaining this! wub.gif
