Hey guys, I was remembering that Vai's video that we had just couple of days ago, and it stood that we as musicians should develop the things we are doing well, as opposed to things that we don't do so well (Vai said this a bit better tho tongue.gif biggrin.gif )

My stronger sides are:

- vibrato
- bends
- pentatonics
- mixing of major/minor scales
- chordal playing with embelishments
- blues scale/dorian/beebop mix

These are definitely techniques and scales that I feel "at home". I must confess tapping and sweep picking were rarely on my practice lists, but I'm slowly catching up there as well.

What are your stronger sides?

- Legato
- Fast Alternate Picking
- Major/Minor scales modes
- Bends

Are my stronger sides. I'm also working on vibrato and tapping which are average currently and started to practice sweep picking lately.

Strong sides: Bending, Hammer Ons and Pull Offs, Vibrato, playing Pentatonics (Major and Minor), Depressed attitude needed for true blues emotion tongue.gif, and finger picking.

Weak points: Legato, sweep picking, tapping, string skipping, and coffee (Gotta have it) tongue.gif

I also saw the video, and thought it was interesting that Vai said he doesn't work on his weak points, but he ignores them, and works instead on developing his good points. Matter of fact that video really bugged me and my practicing for a couple days cause I was working on one of my weaknesses (legato) and wondered if I should be working on one of my strengths instead. In the end I decided to go ahead and continue working at legato, and just try and split my time evenly between developing strengths, improving weaknesses, and drinking more coffee! biggrin.gif

What I think Mr Vai actually meant, is that you should not let yourself frustrated by what you can't play ...YET biggrin.gif practice that with a light heart and work hard to perfect and develop what you already master wink.gif in due time you will be able to bring balance into your playing.

Yes I think this is a good way to put it.. If we did ingore our weaknesses completely nobody would be able to play using their little finger ! laugh.gif

So yes, continue working on your legato.. never let your weaknesses hold you back or dictate what you can or can't do.. but the thing about working on strengths is you can get to the very core of who you are as a musician much quicker and find something that is unique to you ! smile.gif

My strengths would be (in my eyes):

Bending
Vibrato
Legato
Timing (not really a technique)

I suck so much I don't even have any strong sides yet, well maybe tapping, I am actually proud of my tapping when I compare it to everything else I can do laugh.gif tongue.gif , but still its nothing special, but that is why I practice wink.gif

I would have to agree with this, regardless if it would be strong or not, to me it's not. I feel I should always be working at it harder so that I may become faster, better times, more articulate.
