Alternate Picking? |

I've been playing guitar for almost a year and have been self taught alot. I don't use strict alternate picking but directional picking which is where when you change strings you may go the same way twice. I was wondering if strict alternate picking was really neccesary. My teacher (Kevin Gamble from Rune) says it's not completely neccecary(Sorry if thats spelt wrong.) but you might run into trouble in the future. Heres a good article about it. Article

alternate picking is a very important technique, specially if you wanna play fast. Even if you don't it is more often than economy picking. But some musicians developed scary economy pickings styles, so it is up to player to really see what suits him. I think both techniques needs to be pushed forward equally.

I agree with Ivan, all techniques are important and should be trained, then it is you to decide about what technique you want to use in what situation.
