GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Your Favorite Amp Tubes?

Amp tubes can be a very personal thing. Some say the days of tube amps are gone. What do you guys think? is "Tube selection" a dead art? It does seem that folks still love tubes and so much so that they get to know quite a bit about all the various types of tubes. Here is an example. It's an article about the best tubes available today. The author goes though a vast array of amp tubes and gives his thoughts on each one. I never knew this much detail about tubes, and probably won't ever know this much about them. But I do appreciate it as an important area of knowledge. Even in amp sims, we get to make choices on which tubes we want (THU has a tube selector for example) and I usually just trust my ears as I cycle through them. For tube amp guys its a bit more complicated. They need to know the names. What do you think?

Here is the article about the best tubes you can buy today.

I think that what tube-amp lovers like is the feeling of playing in front of an amp, compared to playing through a virtual amp from a software program.

I experienced it too; Playing in front of an ENGL ironball 2 through a 2x12 Celestion speakers is not the same feeling as playing the same amp through a software.

What we hear from the software is how an amp sounds when recorded through mics, instead of what you would have really heard from a speaker in a room.
