Ive seen some people playing along with the lesson instructor in the rec program.. Shouldnt they be playing along to the backing track only instead of playing with the lesson instructor.. Its much easier to play along with the instructor than it is playing along with the backing track only...

any messups will not be easily heard when playing along with the instructor, and the timing will be easier to follow when playing along with an instructor.. when you play only to a backing track you will hear any messups and will hear if your timing is off

Just to answer your question.
Yes, the lesson must be played to the backingtrack.

For those that decide to play along with the Instructor, the submissions will be noted and handled accordingly.

You are to play with the Backing Only. It's the only way to get an honest opinion of where you are with the lesson, don't cheat yourself on getting an accurate grade, this only helps us improve. Read the topic HERE

You are absolutely 100% right John.
Members who play with actual audio file with solo have much easier way then ones with just backing track.
I hope all members will do it with backing track in the future !

indeed you are right..

i am currently working on a lesson, and to get the timing right, i play along with the instructor.. when i think i am pretty much there, i am in bliss..

at least until i try the lesson just with backing.. while the timing is usually pretty close, all other faults are very apparent.. bending are off, accidently hitting other strings.. not totally muting rest of strings..

so ya.. rec videos should be to backings only..

I was kinda on the fence about posting the Thrash lesson. There are two versions of the backing track. One is just bass and drums, the other has a guitar added that doubles a lot of what the lesson teaches, but varies in some spots.

I ended up playing over the track with the additional guitar because that's what Gabriel played over in the lesson.

In addition to everything said - playing along with instructor will not help you to spot those subtle things that need additional fine tuning, so I think it is actually bad to play while the original guitar is heard. It is best to keep it guitar free, so you can hear only your guitar and see what kind of progress you are making.

PS I think all members should ask for backing track and record with backing track without instructor playing.

I guess it'd be nice to post one take with and one without BT, just as in collabs, so one can rate properly, then.

I'm late on this... I haven't done lessons above difficulty level 5, so I'm not sure this applies entirely for me. I tend to listen to the instructor play, and then play as far as I learned the song only with backing track. I haven't done many lessons, but I haven't encountered a situation where I absolutely needed to play with the instructor...

Anyway, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes ! When recording, you should only be using the backing track ! This way you don't cheat yourself nor your teachers ! biggrin.gif I actually haven't recorded myself for the REC program yet, so who am I affirming what so many others have said before me ! biggrin.gif

For true results best way is to ask the instructor for the backing track and then to record your take with the backing track only. That way you will get much better sound quality and also you and fellow instructors will give you a much more precise opinion on it! wink.gif
