Hey there everyone, I would just like to post one of the warm ups I use to improve my legato, as well as building more strength especially in my pinky-finger.
Exercise 1a : Simple chromatic work-out useful to give the pinky independence from the ring-finger. -----------------------------------------------------1-2-3-4---2-3-4-5-------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------1-2-3-4-------------------------2-3-4-5--------------------------------------------- -------------------------------1-2-3-4-----------------------------------------------2-3-4-5---------------------------------- ---------------------1-2-3-4--------------------------------------------------------------------2-3-4-5----------------------- -----------1-2-3-4-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2-3-4-5------------ -1-2-3-4--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2-3-4-5- ... Keep moving up the fretboard, and do NOT stop before you've played every single fret ! This will be very helpful in the end, although it can get painful and frustrating. Alternate picking should be used. Exercise 1b : Repeat previous pattern, but now using hammer-ons (only one down stroke per string). Exercise 2a : Pattern often used in some positions in the aeolian mode. This is still a chromatic exercise, and we will repeat this pattern all across the fretboard, uniquely in order to make the fingers get used to it. Alternate picking should be used. -----------------------------------------1-2-4---2-3-5----------------------------------------- ---------------------------------1-2-4-------------------2-3-5--------------------------------- -------------------------1-2-4-----------------------------------2-3-5------------------------- -----------------1-2-4---------------------------------------------------2-3-5----------------- ---------1-2-4-------------------------------------------------------------------2-3-5--------- -1-2-4-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------2-3-5- Exercise 2b : Repeat the previous pattern, this time using hammer-ons. Exercise 3a : Another pattern often used in some positions in the aeolian mode, as well as the first position. Exercise 4a : We will now play something beginning to look like a scale, but still a chromatic exercise, alternating between the pattern from the exercises 2 and 3. -----------------------------------------1-3-4---2-3-5----------------------------------------- ---------------------------------1-2-4-------------------2-4-5--------------------------------- -------------------------1-3-4-----------------------------------2-3-5------------------------- -----------------1-2-4---------------------------------------------------2-4-5----------------- ---------1-3-4-------------------------------------------------------------------2-3-5--------- -1-2-4-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------2-4-5- Exercise 4b : Repeat the previous pattern, this time using hammer-ons. Exercise 5 : Extract from Steve Vai's "10-hour work-out". This is a good exercise to give every finger independence by changing fingering order on every string. You basically play four notes on every string, but changing the first note played, from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 1 ... You'll figure it out. Alternate picking should be used, but legato can be rather difficult in this pattern. --------------------------------------------------------2-3-4-1---4-5-2-3-------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------1-2-3-4-------------------------5-2-3-4--------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------4-1-2-3-----------------------------------------------2-3-4-5---------------------------------- -----------------------3-4-1-2---------------------------------------------------------------------3-4-5-2----------------------- ------------2-3-4-1-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4-5-2-3------------ -1-2-3-4-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5-2-3-4- Hope some people find these exercises helpful. I do not think you need to play with a metronome; the speed will increase all by itself as your fingers get stronger. You will feel the difference ! also try 1324, 1423 and all 24 combinations and reverse. These are great but sometimes boring exercises I used to use them a lot when I was building speed

Hey there, I'll try to add some more stuff then guys, thanks for your comments. There is one exercise I find very helpful which can be downloaded on www.ultimate-guitar.com (name = Steve Vai 10-hour work-out) ... Please come back for more patterns !

Yes, it is important to reverse those, increases finger independence greatly! Alex, thanks for ex. but Marcus Siepen did this before Check his lesson on warm up, I do that every day Yes, I saw his warm-up lesson, but I don't think it is identical to mine... Anyway, this is for pure beginners who really need to strengthen their fingers... Hope you other guys didn't think it was too much of a copy ! Thanks for the comments ! Very cool warmups, these are classic of course! You can combine all possible combinations in a system, works pretty well for syncing the hands as well.

Thanks for the tabs. I can sure use the variety. I thought I had good pinkie control until I tried some of these variations. Surprise, not so much control as I thought.

I have been practicing many of these combinations (well not all) but recently I practiced just my ring and pinky. ---3--4---- ---3--4---- 2 notes per string all the way from 6th to 1st string and reverse. I have noticed a significant improvement in independence of these two fingers and strength of my pinky. Perhaps that might help you as well. Playing all 4 fingers makes pinky dependent upon the ring finger and the whole palm (sort of). Hope that makes sense. You are right, maharzan ! There is a very helpful lesson by Muris that uses some the kinds of patterns your are talking about (two notes played by ring finger and pinky), and I will try to add some more patterns, as this thread seems to be increasing in popularity ! I'll post it on the student instructor board when it has a more complete collection of exercises ! Thanks for the comments, guys ! Oh, and I almost forgot !
