Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to do this, I'm going to be in a band soon where me and the other guitarist are sharing vocal duties but we've never tried this type of thing before, so are there any exercises or anything that could help me and him could use to become accustomed to this type of multitasking?

Thanks in advance! smile.gif

Practice slowly.

Could start by humming as well at first.

Hmm,main problem in there is to split voice timing and right hand's timing, which is rhythm.
I'm not going to say anything new Owen but....practice!

My advice would be to practice both in isolation until you can do them on autopilot, then practice them together ...

And another tip (from watching a video of me gigging one time) don't spend all of your time looking at your fingers playing guitar to only look up when you have to sing something- it looks moronic wink.gif

Advice for the easy way in playing guitar and/or singing:

1. There is no easy way.
2. See number 1 !

Here's some more advice: simply the songs when you first start practicing.

When I starting singing & playing acoustic guitar at the same time, I COMPLETELY butchered the strumming on purpose. Try singing and playing quarter note strums on the down beat. When you can get through the entire (boring) song like that, do it again with eight note down up strums.

When you can do that, try doing 16th note strumming.

It's better to practice harder techniques from the start, even if you never need them. I can't think of a single acoustic guitar song with non stop 16th note strumming from start to finish, but if you could play it like that and sing at the same time, there's no much you couldn't do.

I suggest to get a feel for it. With Rythem, and strumming chords, whilst singing. Try this song. I can play and sing it at the same time, and took me about a week to get that down. To where i didnt kill it!!

From my experiences, it's a practice thing. There's a disconnect that's needed so that you can autopilot both activities. To me, it was a lot like learning how to play drums - all 4 limbs needed to be able to maintain different activities.

Simple songs ( like Bullet by The Misfits comes to mind ) where the vocals and guitar parts aren't completely different rhythmically would probably be easiest to start and build up confidence. For more challenging ones, just keep playing the guitar parts endlessly so you don't even know you're playing them when you try to put vocal rhythms over them.

One caveat : I personally found that I was able to put a LOT more into the performance ( for stage presence, technical ability and energy ) once I concentrated on just one item. I ended up playing guitar to help write the songs, we got a rhythm guitarist to replace me on stage and then I just concentrated on vocals. Nice part was with a wireless mic, this allowed me to get in the pits at our shows, heh.

Of course, your milage may vary - just my two cents.

Owen: ohmy.gif I think you have to practice playing the guitar walking and talking first... do it naturally... walk all aroud your room and try to practice some easy solo at the same time, then do it again with some speaking. and lastly sing. I hope it helps

I might also suggest to keep it simple first.... cut off/change difficult parts.
If the guitar part has a complicated rythm pattern forget about that and start first with simply strumming only on the heavy beats. Or vice versa only sing the first syllable of every heavy beat or stressed syncope.
Give yourself some kind of orientation where what has to happen first before rushing in...

You can also train by strumming beats on the guitar and counting different ones.
Such as play quarter notes and sing 8 notes.
Or play 4 and sing 3rds... etc... simple patterns to give you a feeling how playing and singing interact.

I should actually do that myself more seriously since I still suck.....
