Singing Whilst Playing Guitar?

When I starting singing & playing acoustic guitar at the same time, I COMPLETELY butchered the strumming on purpose. Try singing and playing quarter note strums on the down beat. When you can get through the entire (boring) song like that, do it again with eight note down up strums. When you can do that, try doing 16th note strumming. It's better to practice harder techniques from the start, even if you never need them. I can't think of a single acoustic guitar song with non stop 16th note strumming from start to finish, but if you could play it like that and sing at the same time, there's no much you couldn't do. Jul 11 2007, 09:42 PM	GMC:er Posts: 144 Joined: 11-July 07	From my experiences, it's a practice thing. There's a disconnect that's needed so that you can autopilot both activities. To me, it was a lot like learning how to play drums - all 4 limbs needed to be able to maintain different activities. Simple songs ( like Bullet by The Misfits comes to mind ) where the vocals and guitar parts aren't completely different rhythmically would probably be easiest to start and build up confidence. For more challenging ones, just keep playing the guitar parts endlessly so you don't even know you're playing them when you try to put vocal rhythms over them. One caveat : I personally found that I was able to put a LOT more into the performance ( for stage presence, technical ability and energy ) once I concentrated on just one item. I ended up playing guitar to help write the songs, we got a rhythm guitarist to replace me on stage and then I just concentrated on vocals. Nice part was with a wireless mic, this allowed me to get in the pits at our shows, heh. Of course, your milage may vary - just my two cents. If the guitar part has a complicated rythm pattern forget about that and start first with simply strumming only on the heavy beats. Or vice versa only sing the first syllable of every heavy beat or stressed syncope. Give yourself some kind of orientation where what has to happen first before rushing in... You can also train by strumming beats on the guitar and counting different ones. Such as play quarter notes and sing 8 notes. Or play 4 and sing 3rds... etc... simple patterns to give you a feeling how playing and singing interact. I should actually do that myself more seriously since I still suck.....
