It's a drill that I also shared with MISTER M to work on "Circle Picking"/Articulating the pick with the Thumb/First Finger. You can pick this any way you like. It's built so that it will encourage your hand to find a balance between economic and alternate picking. Start slow. This is one of the best picking drills I've ever come up with. Give it a whirl!! But from my perspective, I'd much rather see a bit played properly and played slowly than played less than precision just for the same of speed. Speed doesn't impress me at all. It's too easy. It's precision that impresses me. There is a subtle difference between what your playing and the actual. Drill. I think you'll get a LOT out of it if you play it correctly. This one is not a normal picking pattern in any way so it does take a bit of work to get to be able to play it smoothly. I wrote this as a song intro actually when I was trying to play myself out of a rut that I'd gotten in to. Every player starts to notice, at some point, that they are drifting back to the same licks/riffs. This is dangerous territory as it can cause people to just put down the instrument. One can play through this of course by simply trying to play things that are new and probably feel awkward at first. If you are struggling to play any given bit, then your hands need work on that bit which means it's probably somewhat new to your fingers. So if you ever hit a rut, try to play things that seem alien, different, un natural. You may end up writing things you can barely play. I could barely play this lick at first, even though I wrote it. Took me a bit of practice to get it smooth as it felt so strange at first. You've clearly put the time in the woodshed! You just.. LEVELED UP!!! *You remain the TOP DAAAWWGG!!!
