QUICK LICKS #18 (Alternating Single and Double Strikes )

INTRO:

In this lesson we are going to do a cool sounding lick on a single string. Keep it palm muted the entire time. Once you get the hand of it, try it on all the strings if you like, but it's not required to level up. Keep your picking even and clean. Make sure to hit the open string twice, and each fretted position once. You are alternating between double and single strikes. This gives a very cool vibe to any single string lick. USE YOUR PINKY and first finger alternately when fretting. Don't try to use the first and third finger. Enjoy!

Here is the tablature. Go over it slowly, note by note. Then play it slowly as well. Don't try to "shred" it right away

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS

This lick makes a GREAT Alternate Picking drill and once you get it down, you can make it in to a great lick.

BTW:
This is just a starting point, Once you play the lick as written at least once, feel free to modify it and do your own thing with it! Pick more/less, change the distance between fingers, try it at different points on the neck etc. Add this drill to your daily practice routine. Future you will thank you for it

GIVE EM HELL!

I should have know THE SPARTAN would be the first to fight!!! Well done there as usual. You are showing the kind of initiative and determination that I have seen before in players who became truly amazing. This is not an easy picking pattern and I've seen if confuse many players, you are not one of those. You seem to have no trouble at all with this picking pattern and fretting at the same time. Not only did you play it well, you played it on every string! Didn't miss a beat the entire time. You are making great progress. Keep up the momentum!! In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!!! Because THIS IS SPARTA!!!!

Wow! I gotta say I'm impressed. This is not an easy lick for most folks. You really made it look like you wrote the lick yourselff. Your technique is spot on. Muting is solid, hand and synch is tight, pick strikes are clean and best of all, the string traverse is smooth as glass.

You just KRUSHED IT with a capital K. Your overall playing style is the most impressive part. You are relaxed, not tensed, playing with confidence and style. There is just not a thing to complain about in your performance here. You could recorded the original video and given the lesson. Very nice!! In other words you just..

LEVELED UP!!!!!

Very close!! On the third set of notes, you miss just a bit. Also, you are not using your pinky here which is why I think you missed the notes you missed. Trying to stretch the third finger that far instead of using the pinky isn't a great way to go on this one. The pinky needs work. This is a great chance to put it to good use!!! Your picking is good! Your muting is solid!! A bit of tweak to your fretting work and bam!!

NICE!!! That's the stuff! Solid palm mute per usual and solid hand synch. This one is all about being able to double pick and single pick in the same lick. It's very easy to get a bit wonky on the picking pattern as it's a very odd pattern to what folks usually play. There are not that many songs that make use of single/double/single/double picking, but being able to do it sets you apart from other players. It adds a unique character to ones playing. You clearly have this well in hand!!!
You just...

Here is Take 1 for you Todd. I put a little bit of a try at something at the end but it was on the fly so nothing very good really.

Bingo!!! You've got some very spiff single string technique going on here. This type of thing can work on every string of course, so be sure to give it a whirl on all of them during your practice or warmup. Each string presents it's own challenges as you'll see. It's worth working on as being able to work on open strings is very handy during solos that are based in an open string key or that have a relative key to an open string. As for this, you got it!!!! and..

NICE!!! You got this one down. It's a tricky combo of open string and closed fretting and you've gotten it down nicely!!! It didn't trip you up one bit. Just smooth as glass. You keep getting better and it's great to see! Keep it up!!!!
