Ah man ,that's never ending game.
The first and most important item of equipment is your ears !
EQ and compression are probably the two most important tools but if you don't know to use them....... sad.gif

It is important to separate the instruments in groups according to altitude-low, medium and high:
Example:
1: BassGuit, Kick, F.tom ...
2: Keyb, Dist.guit, g.acu., tom1, tom2, snare, Voc, Bck.Voc1 ...
3: Cymb, Crash, Splash, LeadGuit, Keyb2..)
All critical instruments are in common because they cover a group of similar Hz range, and their waves are coming into conflict.
Open every instrument's HZ range is not an easy job and requires a good ear and a lot of nerves, but time, practice and knowledge makes wonder smile.gif

Glad all of you liked the chart! I can't take credit for making it though, don't know who did except for the link printed on it to the origin and then someone put it together nicely.

That chart is really cool.

Sinisa has the same approach like me when it comes to mixing. I separate all instruments per track and start adding one by one slowly into the mix. I do know some stuff about frequencies but I mostly rely on what I hear. You have to know how to listen to your monitors whether they produce enough bass, middle etc... Test on as many hi-fi devices as you can to make sure that it sounds good on each. Mastering is also important but that's another science.
