How A Crowd Sounds Good

This was something i was thinking about the other day, how a large or even medium sized crowd can sound good when singing. Most of the people in an audience can't sing or even hold hit a note yet together they all sound great. Now if you take a good choir, generally they will all sound spot on and sound better than a large crowd because they can all hit the correct note.

My theory is a kind of general note. The crowd knows roughly what note needs to be hit (just from their ears) so if that note in question is a D, some will be sharp or flat to the note and some may even be closer but generally the note is evened out because the surrounding notes would equal the relevant note. Now normally in a smaller amount of people they would just be out of tune but because of the number of people you're getting a general note of what needs to be heard. Possibly correct or something else?

No, its just that the crowd singing kills all of those notes that are horribly wrong and the averagely good notes are enforced in the crowd, because even if they take wrong note, they will upheld the intervals.

For example, lets say the melody is B, C, C, A, C, G, F, G (C being the tonic). If they start from E (that means horribly out) they will instinctively sing F after that - from Maj 7th on Perf 1st and with so many people in the crowd, you will hear the melody, but not concrete notes

This all is only IMO tho:)

In my opinion, generally, what you said is going to be correct. Each person wil be slighly off the note either high or low. When added together, it'll average teh result and generally hit the note that it should be.

This is the same reason why violin players use so much vibrato. With no fretting, it helps to disguise errors in the pitch of the note thy're playing. The same goes for singing, vibrato helps hide not quite hitting a note by hovering around the note and increases the ability of the singer to sustain the note they're hitting.
