Graphite necks are cool in terms of playability, but how do they behave when plugged in? Muris said they sound metallic.. Is that a sound from a whole guitar or neck particularly?

They sound great to my ears. I have been playing graphite necks since pretty much the day I started playing guitar though. My favorite player when I started was Vito Bratta of white lion and I had to have a guitar like him. He played a steinberger. I played steinberger for about 10 years. Then I saw a video of myself playing one and it looked like I was playing a ukelele because I am about 6'6" tall, LOL!! I sold the headless steinberger and bought one of their new models that had a headstock. I loved that guitar!! Brett Garsed plays one and Buckethead has one as well. It is the steinberger GS model. I unfortunately had to sell it in order to help pay for college, but I was going to purchase another one 4 years later when I graduated and got a job. They took about a year to build so I called steinberger when I had about 6 months of school left so I could order one and it would be ready shortly after I graduated. I was told they didn't make the GS model any more, DOH!!!
So I bought an Ibanez and had moses graphite send me a neck and made my own GS model. I use an LSR roller nut and steinberger locking tuners in conjunction with the Ibanez ZR trem and it gives great results as far as tuning stability.

So to answer your question Ivan, I think the graphite necks sound and play great but 1) I am biased towards graphite necks and 2) my ears are so used to hearing them I don't know if I could tell how they sound compared to a wood neck. I would love to give Muris one of my guitars and let him see what he thinks of it. Not only the sound but the playability of it as well. I'll bet both you and Muris would love it!!

Monte

Also, if you use the Piezo pickup with distortion, I will agree that is metalic. Sound great with acoustic clean setting though.

Yeah. You get a metallic sound if you're using it on wrong settings also. It is easy to have piezo on without realising this and you don't want piezo on when playing rock and metal riffs. But they don't sound metallic to me when set up normally.

Piezo is definitely not the kind of thing to use when doing any kind of playing besides clean acoustic and strumming work.
As for graphite necks, it's too bad I don't get the chance to try one. I would like to hear how it sounds on the same setup I'm using my guitar. I have a maple/satin finish, so getting around the neck is fast and precise, and even without that, it is a matter of habit and practice, but sound is something different.

BTW What's the story about frets on graphite necks?

What about the frets Ivan? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif They are just like frets on wood neck guitars. I have dunlop 6000 on my necks.

Those reviews on harmony central are old and outdated IMO. The fretwork on the necks I got was top notch. I don't think you would have to do anymore to their neck than to a custom neck. You still might have to have the frets leveled and a set up done to it but you would most liklely have to have that done on any custom neck. You do have to drill holes and install the inserts but it is very simple and if you send the guitar body that you want to use it on to Moses they will install it for you for a fee. They do do stainless steel frets. Google "moses graphite" and check out their website.

Thanks! That is good to hear, tho unfortunately for me it now means I start considering spending more money on guitar gear...smile.gif
