I wanted to get a JSX combo but the retailers I deal with have none in stock. I'm wondering what other combo would come closest to JSX tone for Satriani type of vibe. I guess I need to look for combos with EL34 tubes. So far it seems the Bugera 333XL and the Hughes & Kettner Switchblade come closest. Would you guys agree? Anyone played these combos and compared to JSX?

I guess the Bugera 333Xl is the closest to a Peavey JSX as it is a fake of the Peavey XXX (the 333 that is). Not too great quality wise though... The hughes & kettner sounds diffrent but with 4 channels you can get pretty much any sound. Can't you just order a JSX if you really want one?

also , try to get one with a closed back
otherwise it won't carry the low end like it should

I have good credit with a certain online retailer. Since the amp is gonna be expensive, I'll need to make payments on it. So I have to deal with them, and they don't normally stock the combo. They do have the JSX head. They have the H&K Switchblade and the Bugera 333XL in stock. Listening to some youtube clips, the H&K does have a similar vibe to the JSX...both built on EL34 tubes....and the Switchblade has good onboard effects and I can customize presets and save them on the footboard...meaning I wont have to buy pedals right away. Also, I assume H&K quality is gonna be head and shoulders above any Bugera. The 50 watt switchblade combo comes in around 1,500 US dollars.....but again it has a built in rack of effects and 4 channels. That's a lot of bang for the buck if ya ask me. I'm assuming a 50 watt tube combo will be plenty loud to play with drummers and do club size gigs. Yea 1,500 bucks sounds expensive but so are Mesa combos, and the JSX combo aint cheap either.

And besides, the Switchblade has some new innovations that the JSX doesn't have. If that's appealing to you.

50 watt is plenty. I have the 100w head and pulled two tubes to make it 50w which still is too much.

I sometimes tend to think you can store too many sounds, I can't tell them apart. But then again, I don't have to use em.
I have one sound for each setting and just switch between the channels. I'm a simpleton that way... too.

Since you're aiming that high, JSX or H&K I think you should rule out the Bugera right away. I even think they raised the price rescently so to me it's not even attractive anymore.

+1 on the JVM thing. He's with Marshall now, so definitely he prefers them over the Peaveys. smile.gif

I love my JVM head but I vote against the Marshall JVM combo!

Marshall makes great amps but they fail at putting their great amps in a combo version, Marshall combos just don't sound good!
They sound a whole lot worse than the actual amp would in a decent cab - for example: all the marshall combos lack low end. It's not enough and if you dial up the bass it just gets muddy as hell...

Afraid me and zakk are gonna disagree now!

Went to a 6 hour clinic on saturday and they had a huge marshall backline, played extensively through a JMD-1, JVM 410, class 5 and an 85th anniversary combo, to my ears and most of the other guys the combo had by far the best sound, closely followed by the JVM with a 4x12, it was certainly a fuller sound from the heads but the combo was definitely the better all round.

Getting Satch tone is not only about the head. Although it may seem obvious, head is just as important part of his tone as other things: technique, tone control with fingers, pick, strings, pickups, wood, guitar speaker cabinet, and effects. ALL these things affect tone, some more, some less, but they are all very important part of it.
If you want to sound similar to Satriani, I suggest any modern head with midrange scoop and plenty of gain. You can start from there and build the tone as you wish, taking all the other important tone factors in consideration, experimenting with different pickups, speakers, effects, techniques on the guitar etc..

What's the difference between the 205C, 215C, and 210C Marshall JVM Combos.....other than price?

Thanks Zakk and everyone else!!!!

Is the JVM the most modern sounding Marshall? I'm not into a vintage or classic rock kind of sound. But I like Satriani's vibe with Chickenfoot and John Levin's tone with the newest Dokken stuff. Levin was playing Marshall's but now I think he uses Splawn.

I checked the price of these combos and they are pricey. I was hoping to throw in a TC Electronic Nova system(multi-effects) with my order but these might price me out of that for awhile. I wont need a Nova system with a H&K Switchblade because it comes with some onboard effects and a footboard to control them and the amp. I am currently playing a Peavy Vypyr Tube 60 combo.

The players and music I like are....

Dokken
George Lynch
John Levin
Chickenfoot
Joe Satriani
Dream Theater
John Petrucci
Rush
Planet X/Tony Macalpine
Iron Maiden
Megadeth

I like hard rock, progressive rock/metal, alternative, and fusion genres....as well as melodic instrumental like Satriani. I don't like vintage, classic or southern rock...like Skynnard or ZZ Top. But I do like a little AC/DC

Zakk is the marshall oracle mate!

The JVM has some great modern tones in it, its prbably the best marshall overall for the stuff you're thinking of doing, definitley try out the JMD-1 as well though mate, it has a digital pre-amp but it still sounds very good and has loads of options.
If you canw ait a while i know marshall are releasing even more amps this year and i have it on inside information that they are going to be some of the best yet! wink.gif

All those sounds are in the JVM, and many more! The 3 diffrent sounding gain modes on each channel offer sooooo much versatility...
And yes the JVM is the most modern sounding Marshall, it has way more gain than anyone would ever need (I play Thrash/melodic Death Metal with mine). Dave Mustaine has his own signature JVM so Megadeth is definitely in there!

I agree with Zakk. The amount of gain in the JVM series is really plentiful, and the build quality is good enough so the amp will last considerable time as well, if you take minimum needed care to it.

You mentioned here quite a few players now, besides Satch, so I may have a better reference points now, but not to go into depth, I believe you definitely need a more aggressive amp with lots of gain, and focused bass. Although Marshall is not exactly famous by these features, JVM can put you in that territory, but only if you control it well and make other parts of the chain (guitar, pickups, effects) all well balanced.

Getting Nova system may be a good thing to tryout before you buy, and to try it on the kind of Marshall you want to buy specially. It's a very good device to use, but it is always best to give it a good test run with the actual gear you are using. This way you avoid buying wrong kind of model. Also, it would be wise to hear how the Nova unit is performing on some other rigs too. Marshall may not be the brand that is famous for getting most out of effects. But these are all just thoughts for you, I hope it helps a bit when making the final judgement smile.gif
