I have recorded this solo a while ago, and I thought this would be a great ear training and theory exercise.

Listen to the solo and the BT, and answer the following 3 questions:

1. What is the chord progression in the backing track?
2. What is the key of the song?
3. What method did I use for constructing the solo?

(Hint for question #3: Here I am referring to some form of repetition applied in the solo. Can you find it?)

I love that you're in B!

Beautifully melodic.
I have no idea what overall technique you employed to construct the solo.

Thanks a lot, Ken!

Regarding the solo structure: there is the same approach throughout the whole solo. I'm not referring to a technique (like legato, sweep, etc.) it's rather an approach. In this solo, I keep on repeating... something, that is always an important element of any music. The whole solo is based around this repetition. If you listen to it, then I'm sure you'll spot it.

Held notes and/or longer rhythms on the first half (first bar) of each chord change?

Yes, that's also something that occurs often in this solo. Good observation!
The method I'm referring to is about rhythms as well, in a different perspective - and it is about repetitions, too.

Any other GMC members to guess the key and answer the above questions? Ken's answers are hidden behind the spoiler, so that anyone can give it a go.

I'm not sure I'm understanding what your after - ?
You start a lot of phrases 'off' of beats one and two (usually repeated notes) followed by a longer 1/8 notes phrase off of beat 3 that continues in to the next bar(?)

You also do this rhythmic and melodic pattern/sequence where you use two repeated 1/8's off beats one, two, three, four and the next one(?)

The gestalt is you employ the centuries old techniques of 'playing melodically'.

Hi Ken,

Yes, I was waiting a bit, to let the other GMC members guess, before I reveal the method.

In fact, it is quite simple, and I'm sure you have, as an experienced musician, instantly noticed it, and then you went further to analyze the patterns deeper. The thing I was referring to, is that this solo is almost entirely constructed by repeating the each rhythmic motive. Of course there are some exceptions in the solo, but most of the time, as soon as I played any rhythm pattern, I instantly repeated it, either in its original form, or with a little variation, addition, tweak, etc.

So while this solo is obviously melodic too, it is based on recurring rhythmic motives.

Ah, laugh.gif Motivic repetition. I guess I was trying to be TOO specific.

smile.gif Yes, this question was primarily addressed to the GMC players who are new to soloing.
