GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Underrated Guitarists

Posted by: Unleash-The-Shred Oct 26 2007, 10:18 AM

Well I decided to make this thread to give more credit to guitarists who deserve it but don't get it.
Post your thoughts.

I'll start.

Andy La Rocque and Mike Wead of King Diamond! They kick so much a$$.

Jeff Loomis of nevermore imo, it might not be underrated for some, i know the band has been there for like 10 years, but well, just thought id mention him,

Øystein Sunde http://youtube.com/watch?v=pLucIJFFPfY

EXCELLENT guitar player, banjo player and songwriter from Norway!

I think I also should mention Johnny Winter and John Fogerty. I'm not sure if I should call them underrated, but I have barely ever seen them being mentioned at GMC.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=-8siLZ4zNbY - Johnny Winter

http://youtube.com/watch?v=u3jwhuxVcik - John Fogerty(Creedence Clearwater Revival, guitarist and vocalist)

Posted by: muris Oct 27 2007, 02:52 AM

Johnny Winter, + 1 for that Robin!! smile.gif

Posted by: Bali Oct 27 2007, 03:03 AM

ME!!! cool.gif

...and Marc Bonilla

Posted by: rokchik Oct 27 2007, 03:04 AM

Well I've said it before but Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac deserves a lot more credit IMHO.

I'd also like to mention Rob Baker and Paul Langlois of the band The Tragically Hip. Amazing band! And two great guitarists.

@Robin: John Fogerty rocks man and so does Winter.

Posted by: Resurrection Oct 27 2007, 03:17 AM

Steve Rothery of Marillion. He's not flashy, but rivals Dave Gilmour for sheer emotion and excellent composition skills. Try the albums "Brave" and "Marbles" for a few examples.

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 27 2007, 07:49 AM

Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth
Andre Siepen And Marcus Olbrich of Blind Guardian
Jared Machaeron and Zeff Childress of Sanctity
Corbin King of Vainglory
Robert Barrett, Pat O' Brien of Cannibal Corpse
Jari Maenpaa of Wintersun

Theres too man to name though

Posted by: Unleash-The-Shred Oct 27 2007, 12:53 PM

Mike Campese
Vivian Campbell
Francesco Fareri
Rob Johnson
Niels Vijlyt
Shane Gibson
Pablo G. Soler

The list can go on and on.

yeah, he also auditioned for Megadeth when he was 16. But like you said one time, to find the good stuff, you gotta search very deep beyond what the media offers.

I have to say.. I agree completely. I love Cream, one of my favorite bands, in fact.

One guitarist that isn't famous to anyone I know is Eric Johnson. laugh.gif (Go ahead and gasp)
Believe it or not, I had never heard of him until I started playing guitar. And none of my friends had heard of him except from me. Now that I've made them listen to him, they love him. cool.gif

Synyster Gates sweeping maestro

All that Remains guitarists technically and musically AWESOME tongue.gif

Jeff Loomis definately, stunning guitarist

Kyle Gass, Tenacious D tongue.gif

Last but not least, (im a bit biased) but Corey Beaulieu never gets any of the glory behind Matt Heafy of Trivium and he is an INSANE shredder and creator of music smile.gif smile.gif

Hey all, another noob "here" but not to the music scene !!

For my first post on this site I will vote for David T. Chastain as the most underrated guitarist.. Has anyone heard the original '80's "Chastain" lineup with Leather Leone on vocals... Their first couple albums are total balls out rocking and shredding.. check it out...

Chastain-Rulers Of The Wasteland
Chastain-The 7th Of Never
Chastain-Voice Of The Cult

Mick Thompson and James Root of Slipknot
Kim Thayil - Soundgarden
Billy Corgan - Smashing Pumpkins
Mike McCready - Pearl Jam
Dean DeLeo - Stone Temple Pilots
Kevin Shields - My Bloody Valentine
Jerry Cantrell - Alice In Chains
Duane Allman and Dickey Betts - Allman Brothers Band

^ Good to see him on there and I totally agree he just fits with Eddie Vedder for totally grabbing the mood and working with it... A very underrated band in general...

Also, I saw Synyster Gates on here a hell of a lot of times and most definitely one of the best current metal shredders out there. His work on Waking the Fallen is amazing totally amazing!!!

The Young brothers of AC/DC were perfect for each other some of the greatest riffs came from them...

George Harrison... The overlooked Beatle. Gotta give respect... I mean his best friend was Eric Clapton...

And always overlooked is Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. I'm distraught that nobody has said anything about him. This guy is phenomenal in what he can do with a guitar. Very unorthodox!!!

And of course all the rest of the guitarists you guys have mentioned totally deserve to be on here!!!

Well I've said it before but Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac deserves a lot more credit IMHO.

DITTO on Lindsey Buckingham. He's a great song-writer too.

I guess my favorite unrecognized guitarists are Michael Wilton of Queensryche (he always seemed to take back seat to DeGarmo) and also Adam Jones of Tool. Even though Jones isn't a shredder, when it comes to writing style and rhythm, to me, he does everything right, and next to Alex Lifeson is probably my main influence.

Oh yea and one more is Mike Einziger of Incubus - he incorporates a lot of jazz influenced stuff, and I'm not much on jazz but the way he presents it I love.

I will add two from Argentina that should be more known in the whole world!

I know he gets some props, but I always felt that Greg Howe was underrated. That guy can shred, play jazz, fusion, you name it. Killer chops, great tone, sweet licks. All around solid player.

'Fast' Eddie Clarke (Fastway)
'Unknown' John Clark (Bill Bruford)
Terry Kath (Chicago)
