Hi there,
can somebody tell me if it is plays a role how much your pick sticks out when you do fast Alternate Picking stuff...Maybe it should stick out only a little bit in order to get lowest resistance from the strings? Thanks for comments... rolleyes.gif

It's a matter of personal preference. I keep just the tip visible most of the time.

Yeah it's a matter of taste I think.
I usually play with a "small" pick and it sticks out just a little bit. Actually yes, it helps me to improve my picking, but it's just a personal opinion smile.gif

I've never actually examined this in my own playing. I just stick with what feels most natural.

I just noticed that almost half my pick is exposed, but it feels weird any other way. EDIT: Never mind it only sticks out a little bit. smile.gif

Well as everybody else said - as much as it is comfortable for you. And I would add one thing - it depends on the tone you want. For example when I play an acoustic 95% of my pick sticks out. When I play some S.R.V. / Hendrix stuff I hold the pick with the pointy end pointing at my pawn and playing with one of the other ends of the pick...

So there's surely a lot for experimenting to do with the pick so take your time and you'll definately find some ways of holding that you will like :]

Cheers,
Hristian

There is no right way to hold a pick, everybody holds it slightly different. Important is that you are comfortable with your way of holding it.

Onesmore, thanks for your advices guys !
But actually my question was a bit more specific but maybe I didn't put it precisely enough...I wondered whether it plays a role when you do Speedpicking/Fast alternate picking...because maybe you can do it a lot faster when your pick sticks out just a little tip because then you have the slightest resistance from the strings...You know what I mean?

I'm not completely sure, I get what you mean, but I'll try:

I play with a Jazz III pick, which in itself is very small, so the amount of pick sticking out is very little. I geuss with a "regular" pick it's different.

I think, that the less the pick sticks out, the more control you get - I haven't tested it, but that is what my logic tells me. Imagine playing with a pick the size of a large paper - and compare that to a small Jazz III pick. I personally thing the latter would give you less pick sticking out and more "control".

Just be sure that you do not move it a lot during picking techniques.
I had that issue years ago when I was totally changing the grip
while going from AP to sweep etc.
It's very hard to achieve specially if it comes fast
one after another. smile.gif

Muris is absolutely right, when you want to change from one technique to another and you will try to change your way of holding the pick at the same time you will be lost smile.gif
