Hello Kieran!
Here are the long awaited assignments for May. You will have one month from today to complete them. If you are able to do them before, that is fantastic, if not take your time and do them by the deadline. Lets look at the assignments now. Assignment 1: Jazz standard, melody and solo - Pick a Jazz standard of your choice and record yourself playing melody one chorus followed by one chorus of solo. - Tempo is your choice and you can also choose to record background music anyway you want it or even use already existing backing tracks (Aebersold or Band in a Box for example). - Try to do everything in original key as it was written in the real book! - Some suggestions for easy to intermediate Jazz standards : Blue Bossa, Blue Monk, Straight no chaser, All the things you are, Autumn Leaves, All of me, Take the a train etc - Submit audio of your work but video with audio is also very welcome for this assignment. *This assignment is like in your previous month but this time please make sure you pick different standard! Assignment 2: Reading and choosing a chord for superimposing technique. - Read Superimposing with Minor Pentatonics over Major type chords post HERE - After reading the whole thing with related link posts, think about choosing one chord and one approach you will use for recording! Assignment 3: Recording and submitting superimposing technique. - After you have chosen your approach, record a backing track with that chord and on top of that record yourself soloing with 1 or all 3 minor pentatonics corresponding with that mode! Let me give you an example here. Lets say that you have chosen C major as your chord. Now you also chose C major to be treated as I (Ionian sounding). In that case you should play minor pentatonics from C major scale ( D ,E and A minor pentatonics) over C major chord in the background. 4th assignment asks you only to pick 1 but it also allows you to use all 3 pentatonics if you want to. Backing track doesn't have to be anything fancy for this purpose. Just guitar playing the chord will do, if you want to add bass and drums to that to make it sound tighter go ahead! Assignment 4: Lesson for REC. - Pick one of the following lessons for REC ! Triads in a song context - HERE Motive development in Bb major - HERE - Record it with backing track(s) provided, upload it to Youtube, embed the video in this and REC thread. Your deadline for all 4 assignments is 26th of June! Please feel free to ask me any questions regarding assignments. Pedja

Hey Pedja,
I was planning on doing both the rec's but as I told you I got a couple of gigs in so only managed to do the one! I tried to link my Jazz standard to the other assignments and chose to do Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers. It's more modal (kind of) well not many 2-5-1's so allowed me to do the superimposing we had covered in the other assignments. The chord progression is. |e-7|e-7|e-7|e-7|Cmaj7|Cmaj7|Cmaj7|Cmaj7|a-7|a-7|a-7|a-7|e-7|e-7|e-7|e-7| |d-7|d-7|d-7|d-7|Bbmaj7|Bbmaj7|Bbmaj7|Bbmaj7|g-7|g-7|g-7|g-7|d-7|d-7|d-7|d-7| |Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7| |c-7|c-7|c-7|c-7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|Abmaj7|f-7|f-7|f-7|f-7|c-7|c-7|c-7|c-7| I did try doing the following structure. head/bass line/solo/head To be honest as the chords don't move much other than imposing secondry dominates on the bass line it wasn't that interesting and even so well... I decided to go head/solo/solo/head and impose different pentatonics on the 2nd solo... just to try it really. On the 1st time through I used Aminor pent for the first 32 bars and F minor pent for the 2nd 24 bards on the 2nd time through I went for Dm pent for the first 32 and Gminor for the last 24... I did lose my way a couple of times and lost a little focus as to picking out correct chord tones and prob stayed on interest tensions or didn't resolve the phrase as i would have liked. Also I must apolgises for my timing slip in the B section of the head, I find counting it quite tricky.. I could have edited it out on the computer, but what does that prove? its kind of warts and all https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk_Q35MfMPc I really found that the superimposing made a really interesting approach to this piece here is the superimposing assignment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMG4F-DrsyU I realized that I messed up and used a maj7 when I should have gone for a major triad... esp as I chose to treat C as the V chord... never mind... Just played around with it. I know we spoke at length about the different modes that imposing different minor pentatonic over a major chord imply... I did add some of the others at places (changing the tonal center of C chord) cheers Here is the Rec Triad assignment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=engV5GkL7V0 Thanks for the following 3 (well 4) months of GMC This post has been edited by stratman79: Jun 26 2010, 11:05 PM |
