One really simple way to do this stuff is to use a tablet or phone for example to play the youtube track and just feed the headphone out to your interface. It's more of a hack than anything but it's a quick and dirty solution smile.gif

With help from Focusrite and Gab's video I cracked it last night, it's one of those things that is a piece of piss when you understand routing and stuff as Gab demonstrated.

I'll put screen shots up this evening for reference. One thing I don't understand is that in Focusrite Control, you have to set the output on whatever you're listening to, ie, headphones or speakers, to 3&4, which I kind of do get BUT you have to select CUSTOM MIX and then select 3&4, if you just select 3&4 in the normal output setting, you don't hear the guitar when playing regardless of the Reaper setting. It's not very intuitive.

I'm made a Reaper template, put it in a folder along with a README about changing the output from 1&2 to 3&4 when using that template. When working normally it's 1&2. Thar's the kind of detail one can forget down the line and spend and hour or more sorting out.

I guess someone with a lot of experience who is changing paths and suchlike a lot would never forget it because it would be ingrained in their mind.

Cheers folks, as said, I'll post screen shots for reference this evening, time permitting.

Stay safe.

Phil

Okay folks, I don't understand what I did, help from Gab and Focusrite helped but pressing and guessing was the main way which I don't really like to do as you don't learn but, hey ho. I think the bloke at Focusrite was using an old version of Reaper so had to improvise.

I don't know, but maybe there could be a wiki spot for this?

Okay, open a new Reaper project.

Create a track and call it "YouYube" or what ever you like as long as you know what it is, I'm going to change miine to "Computer" because it will record anything generated by the computer, YouTube, GP files, mp3s etc BUT NOT YOUR GUITAR OR MIC, or anything plugged into your Scarlett.

Click route and create a new hardware out put (3&4) the in the same section make the parent channels 3&4.

Do the same for your guitar track but make the parent channels 3-6, don't ask me why but it works rolleyes.gif

In Reaper preferences be sure to have all the outputs available, or at least the ones you need.

In Focusrite Control make sure that whichever outputs you are using, you set to 3&4, you will have to change them back to 1&2 when you go back to normal recording.

When using this method, the slider control in Focusrite Control is inactive, you have to use a combination of the slider in Reaper to control listening output and the vol control in you app you're using to control input to Reaper.

Finally SET THE LOOPBACK OUTS TO 1+2

I hope this helps someone, it's taken me a lot of practise time sorting it out sad.gif I was going to do it at the weekend but having received the last email from Focusrite, I wanted to do it while I was switched on to it.

Please don't ask for an explanation but you can give me one if you want to biggrin.gif

Cheers folks.

Stay safe

Phil

Caused me some grief tonight, I had altered the Focusrite Control and realised after much chaos, that I'd missed a critical image in the post above, I've updated it now but I was frantically pressing and guessing until I fixed it, that's when I realised I hadn't put the image in, I was following my own instructions above but it wasn't helping because of that last image not being there. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

At one point I loaded a Focusrite Control Snapshot that I thought was the one I'd saved but I hadn't actually saved one, I don't know what it was I'd saved or if it was a default thing but the sound from my speakers was BLASTING out, I frantically turned down the volume knob, nothing, nothing I did would reduce the volume and I had that many tabs open in my browser I couldn't see which was was playing the YT video. I think I alerted the entire neighbourhood blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

Anyway, hopefully that is correct now.

Cheers

Okay, I've found an issue with recording with the above settings. You can't render the tracks, or at least I can't see how to do it. The Master track doesn't receive the signal. If I tell it to render "selected media items" it renders each channel independantly one ofter the other.

Maybe I'm asking too much from Loopback in Reaper or maybe it's just my lack of knowledge.

If anyone has any idea please let me know.

Cheers

Phil

Update: When rendering you have to change your parent channels back to 12 in the loop track and 1-4 in the guitar track.

Pressing & guessing and turning & learning gets us there in the end, you just struggle to remember what you did. It's sinking in slowly now though.

Okay, I've had to stop trying to do this, it's killing too much time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I managed to do a video for Todd's Bootcamp tonight using the increasing metronome in GP as the loop, and my guitar as a separate track, I didn't need to do it that way, I could just use the standard loopback with everything going to one track but I wanted to keep my hand in. It worked perfectly. I closed REaper and then remembered that my current mission has two parts. I opened Reaper back up, and it started sending the guitar into the loopback track as well as its own track, I checked all settings and they matched my pictures in this thread. I tried everything I could and I couldn't get the tracks to work independently. I even called up the Reaper template that I saved yesterday AND the Focusrite Control Snapshot that I created yesterday. No result. I just don't get it at all.

I have to admit defeat and it kills me to do that. I know I can use my phone etc but I really wanted to crack this.

It must be something I'm doing but I can't see how if I'm opening up a template or project that worked five minutes previously.

sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

UPDATE:

I've just created a new project, it works with the separate channels but on track two, it now gives the option of parent tracks 3-4 whereas last time it only gave 3-6. Also, I can only get a guitar signal if I have Reaper open, if Reaper isn't open I can't even get a dry signal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I set it up from scratch this evening, new project, just like in the pictures in my thread about it and it worked. I did it from memory rather than look at the pictures and I shall continue to do it every time until it is ingrained in my brain.

Must have been some kind of glitch last night and I forgot the golden rule of fixing things, switch it off and back on again rolleyes.gif

I would rather try to understand it all though than just commit it to memory, I don't like doing things "parrot fashion" sad.gif It will sink in one day and I'll think to myself, "Philip you plonker, what didn't you get???"

Cheers

UPDATE:

When you come to render the tracks, set parent channels on both tracks to 1-2 and TURN OFF RECORD MONITORING to prevent any nasty noise that could damage speakers. I still don't understand this, I really need to study routing but don't know where to look.

When I've come to a final fail-safe solution I'll make a complete new thread with screenshots and tips for every step. For now, I hope this will help someone else bumble through.
