No Motivation To Practice Today

Since joining GMC a few weeks ago, I made a mad scramble to get my affairs in order guitar-wise. I managed to formulate a practice schedule that will keep me busy for the foreseeable future. I also found myself getting into the habit of a routine which is definitely a new thing for me. First time ever I can truly say I am focused on what I was doing rather than just wasting away the time noodling and not breaking any new ground.

So here I am barely a week or so in and today I just couldn't be bothered. I play for a while. Then, I just set it down. I ain't feelin' the love. This is a little disconcerting in that I have only just gotten started ... Maybe I have been devoting too many hours per day? I often don't recall how long I am spending per day which tells me quite a few.

What is your experience?

That happens smile.gif

Try something different, learn some new song from a band you like, or record your own backind with a few powerchords and then try to jam over it... do something fun.

Practice schedules are good, but sometimes our brain needs to break free and just have fun with guitar

Thanks guys. Sage advice. That would be it. I have been taking the idea of a practice schedule to the extreme. Taking the fun factor out of the equation. As much as I am excited about the guitar again I need a little balance and do other things too! There are quite a few things that have been neglected as a consequence of spending too much of my time practicing. I should know better for as you say there is more to life.

Yep. I did notice my mind was wandering while endeavoring to play today. It wanted to break free ... smile.gif At least for a while.

Well this happens. We just can't be on a level of concentration and motivation every day. I often recommend to include rest days in a practice schedule. On those days you can get your mind off, possibly go to a gig/concert or watch a dvd. You can read theory too on those days if you still want to do something "guitar useful". Its not good to over burn yourself with excessive hours of practice and no rest.

So for today I recommend watching some good concert on dvd and just resting. Tomorrow inspiration and motivation should be there! smile.gif

How many hours are you "supposed" to be practicing per day in your new routine??

I find that I can only focus for about an hour at a time and then I need about a 15-20 min break. I can get in 2 hours in the morning and 1 hour at night of practice. Any more than this and I seem to burn myself out after about a week or so. Maybe if I didn't have a wife and kids I could do more......but without them my life wouldn't be near a fulfilling. cool.gif

Good luck!! smile.gif

I think a factored in rest day would be a good idea. I am probably doing too much. I am not sure exactly but I think I may have done over four hours practice on some days. I try to devote equal time on electric and flamenco as well as throwing in some ear training, learning the fretboard etc. I need some balance. Thanks for all your advice thus far. This is as much a learning process as the rest.

Its also a question of what is "effective" practising or what is "leisure play". When i was a teen I could spend 6-8 hours playing to records or just jamming on the guitar, but there was no goal-intended practising - which is a pity, I've been a whole lot better today if I had practising properly instead...

Never take the fun out of playing, ever!

Perhaps that's what you did by making a tough schedule for yourself.

This happens to all of us, there are days on which I play for hours, on others I play only a bit, and there are days on which I don't even touch a guitar. Sometimes it is even good to take a little break, so don't worry too much about it if you don't feel like playing from time to time.
