I've had my guitar since 94' and besides changing the strings and having a humbucker upgraded, I haven't done much with it. It's a nice Ibanez, with a non locking tremolo. It stays in tune pretty nice, but I feel there's excess noise with distortion. I have three pickups, one being a single coil and same results in each position.

So the questions I have are:

How often should you have your guitar adjusted/setup?

Will a proper adjusted guitar get rid of those little buzzing and such?

Last a question for Andrew C, since I know you have a POD XTL also, when using the Veriac Plexi (6D) factory setting (I'm just using this as an example, it's not the only one), do you get background buzzing noise when playing? I understand the muting concept and keeping things from sounding out, but even when doing that I get that noise. Thats through headphones, and amp.

Hi RodneyU,

I get zero noise (I assume you are talking about hum here) - but don't be too quick to blame your guitar. First, I have a variax which has PiezoElectric pickups - totally immune to buzz so its not a fair comparison. Regular pickups should be expected to get occasional hum, maybe excessive hum if you are near an interference source such as a monitor. Humbuckers should help with this somewhat. When I hook my strat up, in my old house I would get a fair amount of hum, in my new place it is fine. Hum is made worse by the amount of gain you have to use to get the right distortion levels, so it could just be the way it is with your guitar. On the other hand, you could have a problem with earthing/screening which a guitar tech should be able to check out for you. Does it get better/worse when you touch the strings?

One final thought - the Pod has a noise gate which is worth using at least to keep things quiet in between notes. If the buzzing is coming through loudly even when you are playing, I'd definitely get it checked over.

Hope this helps!

IMHO - I would recommend getting your guitar set up / adjusted whenever you feel like it's not playing the way it should, not sounding the way it should, etc.....if you find a good tech at a local guitar shop, you can get a setup done pretty cheap and have your guitar back within a day. And when you get it back, if the guy's good, you will be grinning ear to ear, because it feels like you're playing a new guitar. Well worth the money, if you ask me (my last setup cost me $30 and my guitar sounds beeeeeautiful). It's the kind of thing that makes you (well, me, at least) want to stay up all night playing.

There's a lot of players who are able to do their own setups...I am not one of them...but it's probably worth looking into.

Outside of the sheer joy of playing a freshly set up guitar....it's probably also good for the guitar itself....making sure the truss rod isn't stressing anything, etc... just like getting a tune-up/checkup on a car.

Just my $.02

Thanks guys. You both were helpful. I just got back from dropping it off to be setup, and we'll see how that works. I'll let you know!

I´m really considering handing one of my guitars into my local shop. But, before that it would be fun giving it a shot in fixing it yourself. I mean, I can mess it up real bad and it doesn´t matter that much since I am still having it fixed.

Now to the question; anyone know any good books, article, tutorials, websites, whatnots about it? I think I know the basics, but I would like to have some kind of reference. Any hints or tips are appreciated!

Ok, just picked up my guitar, and it sounds great! Big BIG difference, and no extra bit of noise muddled in. One thing that may also came into play is that they "Rewired Symour Duncon Pickup to be in phase with middle pickup." Yes, I did wire this myself intitally. And like wheeler said, it's like I'm playing a new guitar!
