GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Musicians And Computers

Hm, in my experience I find people who are computer savvy also seem to be musicians. Did you guys ever notice this?

I for instance am a software engineer by trade and my main hobby is guitar. In college all my colleagues seem to be musicians. I dunno maybe it's an isolated incident, but some my professors also seem to play music.

What gives?

I dunno; but I study at MIT, and I am a computer engineer, graphics designer, and architect.
So maybe that's why I like music biggrin.gif

I work in the software trade - at least 5 people in my company play guitar (its 100 people) - funny huh?

You always make fantastic topics fatbot ! smile.gif I agree with you totally on this one! I was a network engineer, hopefully turn web designer. And I totally seem to gel with guitar and learning music !! smile.gif

I always remember a qoute from herman li, when he said he dosent consider himself a musician but rather a computer geek who plays a bit of guitar (or something along those lines). Thats how I see myself too hehe biggrin.gif

Never thought if it before but from the musicians I know an overwhelming bulk are in the IT business...

I always thought before, and still do, that musicians have a higher sence of art. Painting, drawing etc. I was good at drawing portraits, comics and so forth. Hence a dominant left (is it?) brain half. Rhymes bad with IT really since that would be the theortical mind at work.

So now, us musicians with an ability of art besices playing an instrument who also are in the IT branch would have two brain halves that work really well! laugh.gif

Unless, like myself, playing really bad or making too many bugs rolleyes.gif

Ive always been computer savvy i guess, my mom is a real computer person,. ever since i can remember i learned almost everything about computers from her, including how to build one from scratch, She built me my first computer from an old ATM....So i was born to be a computer geek smile.gif

One of my first positions in a computer related field was a network engineer, I just basically went around setting up wireless networks at rich peoples homes in the Hamptons.
One of my co-workers was an established guitarist and really taught me some licks. We used to sit around and play guitar while doing reloads on Windows PCs, talk about a dream job, we used to make 20$ USD an hour! hahah

I've been around computers since 1984 when my high school put in a computer lab. Now I repair and configure PCs as a hobby. Still I have some musician friends who are almost computer illiterate. They have other artistic hobbies instead: Painting, drawing. I even have a friend who builds medieval armor.

I'm a pretty big computer geek also. I just finished building a new pc and All I'm waiting for now are my new surround sound speakers to come in. Should be great, but yeah I'm also addicted to music. I play both the guitar and trumpet and I love them both. Ok i guess I like guitar more.. lol but I love learning about music theory and how it all works. Currently I'm a computer science engineer at Clemson University, well after i transfer at least smile.gif.

havent posted in a while.. hmm =P

i think its mainly due to us getting used to googling things for help and such
+ we are a community of guitarists online - so we all have experience with pcs atleast a little bit =P

lotsa my friends play guitar and rarely use computers

but when you do go to the computer you can find a whole load of resources to use, GMC a good example =P

and loads of people google for tabs n stuff
