QUICK LICKS 113
**Picking is "Dealers Choice" Whatever works for you**

In this quick lick, we expand on what we did in Quick Licks 112. We take the same shape and then just move down one string. So play it twice in the original position and place it twice on the next string below. No speed requirement on this. Just play with precision. Don't try to over play it. Keep it at a speed the is comfortable for your hand. This lick will work your left hand quite a bit and is great for building endurance. Also, sticking the landing on the pinky when you traverse down a string is challenging at first, but gets easier with a few repetitions. You can take this lick through every string if you really want to get a great workout for your left hand. This is a great lick for working on building precision/speed. Give it a whirl!

Take 1 Sarge.

I couldn't make anything musical out of it though but i will try tomorrow. I do struggle to make arpeggio stuff musical, I'm thinknig it kind of needs a lot of repeats and moving around a la Yngwie?

I'm truly impressed. You nailed this one right off the bat. A year ago, a lick like this might have given you some trouble. But now, you are able to get it and play it right away! You nailed the pinky landing as well on both strings! It requires a slight shift in the left hand making sticking the landing harder. You managed it without missing a beat. If this isn't a confirmation of your progress, I don't know what is. Very well done. I honestly think you had less difficulty with this lick than I did. It certainly took me longer to play it smoothly than it took you to see it and post your vid! I worked on this for two days to get is smooth and even. Well played! you just..

Thanks Todd and thank you for your kind comments on my progress.

If possible could you give a quick picking analysis please? I just let my hands do what they wanted but I have been told in the past that not doing alternate picking can ruin the rhythm.

I'm trying to understand a bit more about key signatures, I looked into that and it looks like G# minor but with a G instead of G# and a D instead of D#. I don't know what this would make it, should I be trying to do this with these licks? I just thought I'd I keep doing it, eventually it might start arriving in my brain.

Cheers

The way I approached this one was to incorporate a few of the techniques that Todd has been injecting into the recent 'quick licks' lessons.
Open string then hammer-on, pinky stretch, alternate picking, pull-off, string traverse.
The most important thing for me is to be able to apply this stuff. Using the lick in a solo (or as part of a song melody) is where the tree bears fruit. To that end, I looped a chord progression (Gm D F C), played Todd's lick at the top > added my own stuff > came back to the lick at the end. The hardest part for me is not making it sound like an exercise. I'm a little sloppy on the time. Definitely had fun doing it.

Nice!!!! You really burned through this lick. Your playing it faster than I"m playing in the demo, and I doubled the speed from the previous Quick Lick. In the last quick lick, I alternate picked it, much as you did in the last one. In this one, I actually use sweep picking for part of it as I just couldn't alternate pick it fast enough to be honest so I had to switch to sweeping it. You may have noticed in the demo how much brisker this one is than the last one.

I"m blown away that you can play this with 10 gauge strings, with minimal gain, and zero delay/reverb on a 335 which has a neck like a baseball bat. I'm using 8 gauge yngwie strings on a wafer thin ibanez neck with the action set so low I don't have to pick anything, and quite a bit of gain and a touch of delay and reverb. Just finger pressure is enough. Even with all that, I spent a week getting this lick up to speed. Looks like you did it in one sitting?

Also, I love what you did with it. Per usual you took a clinical sounding hand drill and turned it in to something very musical which is the entire point of everything. Super cool. I love seeing these licks expanded and made in to way more than just a drill. Super cool.

You nailed it and made it way cooler than it started out. Needless to say you just..

Sure thing! In terms of your picking, you are doing an alt pick approach on this one which is exactly how I played the previous one. However, you may have noticed that in this new 113 full speed demo that I start alt pick then sweep the rest of it in order to gain some speed in playing the lick. The demo is about double the speed of the previous quick lick. I wanted to show one alt picked and one sweep picked. Both of these are "Dealers choice" on picking so Alt is just fine. You are doing a good job of alt picking it. I can see a couple of spots where it looks like your pick hand was just a split second behind where you wanted it to be as if it was still finding it's way. This is normal when working on complex licks like this. If possible, I'd say try to do this one as a practice sweep/rake pick, just to work on the technique. Another sweep lick is forthcoming so it will help you prepare for it. The upcoming lick will be easier to sweep than to alt pick. I'm excited to share it. It will be a couple of Weeks out so you have some time.

In terms of the Key, we start in G Minor, then we switch D minor. The root note is the open string so it's starting on open G so we are in the Key of G and the notes fit in the minor scale. Then we switch to open D and do a D minor arpeggio. I try to keep the theory bits in quick licks as simple as I can as these are more about physically playing a bit of riffage than about theory which can bog people down sometimes but it's good to learn theory as one goes so keep it up!!

Ha, ha! It's all relative. My 335 is my easiest guitar to play. Compared to my Strats and Teles, it has low action and a fast neck. I also used way more gain than I usually do and a bit of delay.
I have no idea how I'm picking it - a little bit of everything.

Thanks for the info Todd,

I thought I was economy picking at one point when I watched it back, maybe not.

Ken, it's great to see you making music out of these. Some of them I can try to make something musical but with these tapping ones I struggle, other than trying to move it around and repeat it enough to fill out a few bars.

Either way, they are helping me with dexterity and also my brain is getting better at remembering things more quickly so it's all good wink.gif

Cheers folks.

Impressive!!!! Not only do you play this tricky bit without noise and with precision, you mod it to make it your own!!! VERY nice work. I'm blown away actually by how good this is. I added that open string to make this trickier. You didn't miss a beat!! Very well done. You just...
