Ok, my mic at the moment is causing me real problems, it keeps breaking/falling to bits and I'm not getting the sound quality I desire out of it, in short its annoying the hell out of me.

Now, I really wanted a condenser or something for recording purposes but I also need a replacement for the dynamic microphone I'm using at the moment - a rubbishy audio technica job and for 200 notes in the UK you can either have one or the other, I however, am stuck wanting both.

To the point, are there any decent mic's that can be used multi-purpose for both recording and live, if so, do they reject feedback well and what sort of tonal quality do they have and will they mesure up to the job?

Cheers in advance guys smile.gif I realise I've been asking a lot of questions about stuff recently but I'm wanting to get all my problems both vocally and with guitar ironed out and sorted, so that I can just get down to the core of what I'm wanting to do. wink.gif

Well these discussions usually kick off with a recommendation for an SM58, and this is no exception smile.gif

The SM58 is about half your budget and is the definitive live mic. Also good in the studio for rock and metal vocals I should think.

If/when you want some greater subtlety in vocals, or perhaps want to mic an acoustic guitar, that's the point I'd start thinking about capacitor mics, and in that same price range I'd recommend a Rode NT1A, or perhaps an AKG C1000S.

+1 with Andrew - a Rode NT1A/AKG C1000 should be about 100-120 UK (AKG is a bit less) including the shock mount and a SM58 about 75UK or less. So you should be able to get both for less then 200UK. Together they'd make a great starting point for mic'ing guitars. If you haven't got XLR cables, stands and stuff you might be able to get them if you cut a deal wink.gif .

Only bit to watch out for - the NT1A will need phantom power.

Cheers,
Tony

Ahh, cheaper than I thought, I didn't check, though I remember paying more than that for my NT1A, or maybe I am just confused over dollars and pounds, or perhaps just confused in general ...

I'm in no particular need to mic acoustic guitars at the moment, I have an electro-acoustic which has a pickup fitted anyway so it still provides reasonable sound quality, enough for my needs anyway.

I'm a bit skeptical about the 58 - will it be of high quality and/or can I get a better dynamic if I pay just a little bit more?

I would say it works like this ... a better dynamic mic than a 58 is .... a capacitor mic smile.gif By which I meanto say, if you are spending more than a price of a 58 its a waste not to go for a capacitor, but bear in mind they are not as good for live. For live I would us a 58 and not spend any extra, and lots of professional acts would agree with me (if they even knew who I was, and heard me say it that is!)

At least I'm pretty sure that Tony will back me up ... Tony? unsure.gif

Well thats cool, I've looked about online and I can get one for about £60 inc p and p, I wish I'd got one three month back when I went to the shop, but I skimmed a bit and got a cheap job with a stand instead, big mistake - but it was £90 in there, which was a bit steep for me at the time.

If I'm not mistaken, Yngwie Malmsteen use SM57 to record his guitars. There are plenty of more expensive mics, but the SM57 kicks all the other mics asses. Though SM58 is probably better for live/vocals.

(I dont know anything about mics btw, but I heard this from a proffesional jazz player that is a huge Malmsteen fan laugh.gif )

+1 again Andrew,
SM58 (or it's near twin the 57) is imo the best dynamic for less then 100UK. There are better dynamics but not really for that price. Once you get close to the 100UK mark for studio work I'd switch to a capacitor mic generally as Andrew says - and perhaps only use a dynamic for some work like nearfield high SPL stuff like some drum micing or right up close to a guitar amp.

Live work I'd have a dynamic but I'd still opt for a SM57 or 58.

Cheers,
Tony

ps If I remember rightly M Jackson's Thriller was recorded using SM57s and 58s - what ever you think about the music Quincy Jones is a class producer so if they're good enough for him wink.gif .
