Well these discussions usually kick off with a recommendation for an SM58, and this is no exception
 The SM58 is about half your budget and is the definitive live mic. Also good in the studio for rock and metal vocals I should think. If/when you want some greater subtlety in vocals, or perhaps want to mic an acoustic guitar, that's the point I'd start thinking about capacitor mics, and in that same price range I'd recommend a Rode NT1A, or perhaps an AKG C1000S. +1 with Andrew - a Rode NT1A/AKG C1000 should be about 100-120 UK (AKG is a bit less) including the shock mount and a SM58 about 75UK or less. So you should be able to get both for less then 200UK. Together they'd make a great starting point for mic'ing guitars. If you haven't got XLR cables, stands and stuff you might be able to get them if you cut a deal

Ahh, cheaper than I thought, I didn't check, though I remember paying more than that for my NT1A, or maybe I am just confused over dollars and pounds, or perhaps just confused in general ...

I would say it works like this ... a better dynamic mic than a 58 is .... a capacitor mic
By which I meanto say, if you are spending more than a price of a 58 its a waste not to go for a capacitor, but bear in mind they are not as good for live. For live I would us a 58 and not spend any extra, and lots of professional acts would agree with me (if they even knew who I was, and heard me say it that is!)At least I'm pretty sure that Tony will back me up ... Tony?

+1 again Andrew,
SM58 (or it's near twin the 57) is imo the best dynamic for less then 100UK. There are better dynamics but not really for that price. Once you get close to the 100UK mark for studio work I'd switch to a capacitor mic generally as Andrew says - and perhaps only use a dynamic for some work like nearfield high SPL stuff like some drum micing or right up close to a guitar amp. Live work I'd have a dynamic but I'd still opt for a SM57 or 58. Cheers, Tony ps If I remember rightly M Jackson's Thriller was recorded using SM57s and 58s - what ever you think about the music Quincy Jones is a class producer so if they're good enough for him .
