Yes.. heres a fun fact.. if you turn her voice down 4 octaves not only does it sound like a man.. it sounds better than her actual voice

Come one, she has a fabulous natural voice, certainly pretty. However I saw a video of her that, unless I am missing something, made a bully into a hero. Just seemed real mean. Where she spends time in the video mostly beating on some other girl because she wanted her boyfriend. Seemed like a poor role model for kids to me, kids can be mean enough without pop idols glamorizing being a bully.

I like her Some songs are really good. But I guess you don´t like her voice. That´s fine, people like different things.
Her guitarplaying I know nothing about though, maby you mean her touring guitarists? She didn´t play the guitar live when I saw her. And I bet she doesn´t play them on her records either.
Her singing live was very good. So perfect.. But it didn´t look like she was having fun at all. Sad for both audience in front row and for her if she doesn´t like doing festival shows. A bad day perhaps..
And here´s another not so funny fact. When going to see Avril instead of hanging with my friends that didn´t want to see her I missed Bam Margera. They met him while I was away.. grr.. =) not that it really matters though, could have been fun though to see him ****faced girl. (edited by Kris - language not suitable for GMC)
Does not feel that super power chord feeling to me, like that would be something wrong.. I guess powermetal is screwed then.. xD

Her second album has great songs for me and many great vocal ideas and melodies. Besides Josh Frese plays drums in some songs... amazing. I don't think that she is bad.. she is pop and comercial but is it bad?
I know a lot of metal women that really can't sing and are editing albums.

I dont dislike her, I`m not about to go out and buy her albums but I`d much rather listen to her when she comes on the radio than a lot of the other rubbish thats around in the UK charts atm

I think she's a talented vocalist, but I cant shake the feeling that she's definitely had some freebies along the way (I also dont think she's a very talented songwriter). I'm also not a big fan of the image she sells to her fans, I think the idea of privilaged folks whining about shallow problems on the microphone is appaling. Which, it isn't just her doing that but still...
She's a great vocalist and a great performer, but I dont respect her as a musician.

Agree. I never saw that video before, checked it out now. The song Girlfriend.
I would have been so much better if the girlfriend was a bitch and not a "geek".
And a bit more sofisticated then trying to hurt the girlfriend fysically.
However the song doesn´t aply that message as it is which is good. Video sucked.
So not how I picture her/message of her songs in general.

She is a good singer, I liked her style more on her first album. This new blonde hair style - I don't like. Also the songs are more washed out now. That's a pop-punk genre and it is built specifically for one purpose - selling records. So I don't blame her for dong that - she is afterall one of the biggest stars today and respect for that. That is a JOB and a big responsibility if anyone noticed. But I am not really into that music so I don't wanna go further with comments there.

She ain't a bad singer, no doubt about that. But the music.. come on... There's nothing more I hate than 'popular music' these days. Pop-punk? Alright, I understand 'pop' with all the crappy music she comes with, but punk? I'm tired of all the pop-punk and skate-punk and the Mainstream stuff! I hear no difference between all those bands... She can't play guitar either. Oh, well, she can sing, too bad she wastes it on such music. So I think all she cares about is the money, as Pavel said.

Yeah! I hate popular music too. That´s why I listen to stuff that is really bad so no one else will like it. And I really get a good underground reputation. But sometimes my friends start liking the same music so then I have to stop listen to it. And generally trash talk the shit out of them bands on forums.

Most pop singers hold a fancy guitar, its just business after all. If she had claimed to be a killer guitarist, then maybe I could see why this discussion might take place. 
I dunno I guess it just seems a little crazy to me considering the pages of top professional players we have discussed on this forum

I think that we all know you can't be everything to everybody. I've done my fair share of pop star bashing myself, but I'm done with that. There is a certain degree of talent in being able to figure out what masses of people like to hear, and she has done that along with her song writers. Unfortunately, you can probably find MORE people willing to take pot shots at musicians WE like than the other way around. That's just the way Pop Culture works, I guess. Steve Morse, Alan Holdsworth, Buckethead, Rusty, and so on will continue to display incredible musicianship, but the sheer numbers of their fan base will not equal Avril's or Justin's, etc. I don't think we'll see Buckethead on many lunch boxes and backpacks of middle schoolers.

For all of you fawning over her song writing ability, the first single off her album found her in a lawsuit with the 70's power pop group the Rubinoos for being remarkably close to their single "Boyfriend". Ready, here's the chorus "Hey, You, I wanna be your boyfriend". Strange isn't it?

as for my opinion, my disgust is not with the musician who is profiting from their music, but for the record companies that use MTV and radio stations to literally force this stuff on people and make it popular. You ever hear a song on the top 40 radio station which you thought was absolutely miserable but it gets heavy airplay? That's not a top 40 song, but they're going to make it one through repetition. No, my disgust is for the public who buys into the 300 bands that sound like some hybrid of Nickelback/puddle of mudd/staind/etc which lets these musicians get away with using a tried and true formulaic approach to song writing. Of course pop is always going to be somewhat nauseating to any male over 18, but I won't fault her for making a living being a musician.

I mean look at those boy bands that were hot stuff at the turn of the century (the more recent turn of the century )...

I'm not sure we're fawning, really. Just saying that she (they) can write for the masses. I agree that a lot of what is popular gets that way by design. That's why marketing and advertising is a profession in itself, I guess.

When I see Avril Lavigne, and other Boybands..... It just makes me sick! Like, a great guitar player who practice 24/7, who does have a band and is really skilled, doesn't get famous, and then we have a good little boy who have a boyband and spend all day lookin' at himself in the mirror and singing Abba, is really famous and earn lots of money doing nothing, while the guitar player works his ass off and don't even get a gig... Is that fair?? I hate the freakin' media these days... The music industry only cares about what stupid teenagers buys, and not about quality. It's about money, not good music. Very well said Matt and I couldn't agree more with you.
I am by no means a fan of Avril but I must give her props. Whether you like her or not she's living the dream a lot of us have in the sense that she's making a living out of her music. It might not be your taste in music but there are people out there that like her and pay money for her work. There is a obviously a market for her style of music so I say don't hate the player, hate the game.
