Hey! i have learnt all the minor penatonic boxes, what do i do now? i Want to learn to improvise and play lead. Shall i learn a new scale? how do i improvise with those boxes?

I played with my guitar "Teacher", and he just told me to play anny rock lick, and he played lead over it, it was really really cool. I think he was playing minor penatonic.

When you learned to improvise, how did you do it?

shall i just learn some lick at you tube and play with? ohmy.gif

There are a bunch of lessons based on the minor pentatonic scale, in all boxes. You should start learning licks, and more importantly become more familiar not only with the boxes separately, but with sets of boxes, until you are able to navigate freely and on impulse all over the fretboard. You can do this by searching "Pentatonic" in the guitar lessons search, and I also strongly recommend choosing a looped backing track of several minutes in length just to slowly move between the different boxes all over the fretboard, and then slowly increase in speed.

The next step is probably learning licks, which can be found at all levels, even level 9 ! biggrin.gif

If you feel you have had enough pentatonic playing, you can move on to other scales, using more notes, like the minor and major scales. They are quite similar to the pentatonic scales, with a few notes added... smile.gif

Try linking all the boxes to form 2 and 3 octave diagonal scale runs, loads of scope in there for licks, also pick out the arpeggios from the boxes you know and try some stuff just with those stronger notes. Minor pentatonic is a greatfoundation, once you have confidence the next step would be the dreaded modes I reckon........

Oh.. I have the same question!! smile.gif But I think I am past minor pentatonic right now. I have been stuck on that for all these years.

Yes, definitely composing licks on your own would be a plus or if you can improvise that even better. I started out with playing some random backing (blues mostly) and try playing along (licks not necessarily pure blues). You know what I mean. You just have to be little bit confident about moving the boxes and trying to connect to each other. e.g 1 and 4 or 1 and 3 boxes. Also try going from box 1 to box 5 or an octave higher.. sliding down notes on each string. Learn to locate the notes.

If you are fairly comfortable doing all the above then I would suggest you to learn the major scale. Perfect it before you do any other scales. Minor scales and other scales are just a variation of major scales and if you learn the theory well, you can easily grasp other scales. smile.gif

I am perfecting major scales right now. wink.gif I am not a pro yet so I hope this will help you a bit.

Yep, and if you don't like composing yourself right now, definitely try the lessons here at GMC. I always thought I want to compose and never learnt any licks (or very few ones) and even after my 15 years playing I am still stuck at beginner level. By learning licks, you actually learn a lot of playing styles and techniques if not composing. smile.gif

Good Luck bro!

I'd say minor scale (aeolian) is a logic next step, as its boxes "contain" the pentatonic ones, adding some notes here and there. Plus it sounds so great smile.gif

I guess he means Natural minor....I would propose fill the gaps to make the pentatonic a diatonic scale with 7 different notes...learn all those 5 different grids to play all major scales in any key and any mode (derived from the major scale) on the fretboard

Minor scale would be aeolian, also called natural minor.

Minor pentatonic has 5 notes. Minor scale has seven.
