GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Song Composing Collaboration
Posted by: lavendell Aug 23 2007, 04:53 AM
Hello guys,
I would like to try a new kind of collaboration
I want us to compose, record, and produce/mix a whole song – from scratch! I’m talking drums, bass, lyrics & vocals, maybe strings, choirs, etc. etc.... and of course Guitar!
I need 5 – 10 people who are into rock (hard and rythmic rock)
If you don’t want to play yourself you can still contribute with your ideas, then I (or someone else) can play the riffs in your place. Just send Tabs, GuitarPro files, sheet music, mp3 files, videos, or anything you can think of to let us know about your riffs and/or ideas.
To maintain the same high quality sound I want all of us to use the same PODxt preset.
Collab.l6t ( 1.75K )
: 863
For those of you who haven’t got a PODxt but still want your playing in the song, I got this crazy idea that might actually work: Send me a .mp3 file with your “clean” guitar (just plug your guitar direct into the soundcard, and record. without any amp). Then I can run that file through my POD and we should have the same sound.
I’ve made this intro to get us started, and to give you an idea of what type of feel/attitude I want in this song. Take a listen to it, to see if you’re interested in participating.
collab_intro.mp3 ( 850.09K )
: 1265
We need 5 – 10 people who will put their soul into this project, but of course anyone at GMC are welcome to contribute with ideas and constructive criticism.

I feel like a collaboration hog but I've got to get in on this one. I might even beat MickeM to the draw!

Man I would kill to be a part of this - it's an
awesome idea Marcus, you rock!
Given the time it takes for me to launch the new site features - I would probably delay this collab with a couple of months.
I'd love to get into one when things calm down and I can give the forum as much time as I would like to.

Standard tuning or Dropped-D ?
Tempo ?
Target Key for the primary theme ?
Do you have even a quick n dirty tab for what you have on that intro idea to base other riffs off the same progressive theme ?
Oh, and way cool idea! =D

Maybe it's possible to plug your guitar into the mp3 player and record, and then import the file to the computer?

QUOTE (GroovinMastiff @ Aug 23 2007, 06:19 AM)
Hey Marcus,
This is a great idea! My brother would like to know if he can contribute drums to the song, he is a pretty good drummer who got accepted to Berklee and he would like to be a part of this.
He wants to know when you need the drum track by, the tempo you're looking for etc.
When he actually gets something recorded, I'll post it up here for everyone to hear.
I would like to contribute guitar as well, but my shredding skills aren't up to snuff yet so I'm not sure whether or not I will come up with anything interesting. I'll start working on a few ideas tonight, and if I find that I come up with something that sounds decent, I'll post it up here for sure.
Peace
Hey GroovinMastiff,
It would be awesome if your brother could play the drums on the song! Though the song must be pretty much finished (compose-wise) before he can record them. Tell him - he's in!
Great, post your ideas here! You're also in!

I'm not sure my lyrics or vocal-style would be a great fit! XD
Did you have any thoughts for general composition ( IE like standard AABACB or whatever ) to give an idea of how many guitar / bass slots you may want to fill ?
Also, know of any free VST plugins to transform guitar stuff to bass sound ?
Posted by: DeepRoots Aug 23 2007, 07:17 AM
Hey Marcus are you still accepting? My recording equipment needs some money thrown at it at the moment but I've tabbed down a variation riff of your intro as a .gp5 if your ready to start accepting...(i'll obviously need either yourself or someone else to play it for me)
Anyhow its a sliding octave riff that i thought would fit just after the intro.
Not all of us are master composers yet so i thought i might as well take a crack at the simpler stuff..
Should i post it now or are you still waiting?

Yeah, if I do this I'm going to need to record it for you on my camera which probably will not have great sound quality, so I'll tab it for you and record an example so that you know how it ought to sound. Then you'll have to mix it in for me with your own re recording

Hey Marcus,
Could you post just the drum track, I thing it would help me get a grip on things, I played around some tonight to get the following but it would not be the right tempo, just some ideas I tossed around,,, it is late and I am not thinking straight, better go to bed.

Nothing is decided so if you feel that AABACB is the right thing for the song - then you're welcome to show us your ideas!
Bottom line: I'm very flexible

Hehe this sounds fantastic. However I must point out that I am still very week at singing (I practice every day though) - but of course I could have a listen and see if there are any chances of coming up with something.
If the resulting song is something progressive with lots of different notes I will most likely not make it.

Hey everyone,
I tossed around a few ideas yesterday, and I should have something posted within the next couple of days. It's just a matter of working the riffs I hear in my head up to speed on my guitar.
From the intro, I'm guessing the song is going to be in D minor? Please correct me if I'm wrong so that I don't come up with horrible sounding, out of key ideas
Peace

I've added your latest riff now (not yet the acoustic part though)!

Hmm never mind, after a few times listening I see that it's actually good! I was just planning it to sound a bit diffrent heheh, need to get a hold of a mic to show you what I mean.
I know... I actually put it 1/4-note earlier by mistake at first, but then I thought It got that cool rythm, so I kept it that way
Do you think it sounds ok enough? it's your spot, so you decide if we should change it!

Hey Marcus,
I know I said I'll have something posted by today, but I just don't want to post anything until I'm absolutely sure that I'm satisfied with it. That said, I'm sorry I'm a little late in posting something, but I'll have something by Sunday night at the latest, I'm going to work on this song all day today, so I should get something that I feel is decent
My brother is actually home right now, are you free to chat with him about the drum section in the GMC chat room?
Another thing I wanted to ask is that since I don't have a POD, you want just a dry guitar sound recorded and then you'll process it, right? It won't sound great since I just use the Garage Band software that came with my Mac, but hopefully it can by processed to sound alright.
Again, sorry for the delay, talk to you soon

I've been very busy with work ( working right now actually ) so my time has been limited. I'll take a look at the current state of things in detail tonight and see what I can figure out.
I like what's there so far and I think that it sounds fantastic. I'd like to understand the sections that are there, and think about the overall plan and direction of the song so I'm not just throwing another riff at it or trying to arrange something completely 180 from what people were thinking.
Was there a specific function you'd like me to fill ? I have lots of experience playing guitar, drums, bass, singing, and arranging - so I'm pretty open though I may be rusty at some of the things ( and things like my bass are ... subpar for doing good recording ). I'm not sure what roles everyone has in this right now - maybe a little list would be helpful. =)

Hey exorcyze,
So far we're just gathering riffs. Then we have to discuss where, and in what order, to place them. Some of them might need to be extended a few bars, etc. It would be great if you could contribute with some ideas for that...
If you already can think think of a plan and direction for the song, you are welcome to tell us about it

Yeah, I was struggling to get the middle lines of the verse into the rythm space allocated, thats why the first and the last bits appear to be right but the middle sections a bit shakey, I'ma working on it.
Edit: I'm also pretty rubbish at mixing, so it's just straight down the middle, which perhaps isnt the best place to position it.

That's great! But yes, it's a bit out of sync there
Could you do another take and use less of that effect? Also, I'm having trouble hearing all the words. Could you post the lyrics here?

Yeah, I was also thinking more of bass vocals, but the sound of the words seems to fit just prefect. Kris said he will consider doing the vocals (if he can find the time for it), and maybe he can put some more bass to it then.
Anyways, great work ballistic31!

I dont know whether to laugh or cry
To say hello or to think goodbye
I dont know whether to fade away
I just dont know what to say
I only ask for that peace of mind
Rejection or affection that I cant find
I only ask for that joy or sorrow
So that my dreams will find tomorrow
I dont know if its love or suicide
I've got my past I need to hide
Got that door under lock and key
Its just you, my aspirations and me
I just dont know any more
I have no convincing intentions
I'm stuck on the road of misdirection
Misguided in my quest for adoration
I'm lost in the street of condemnation
Thats the full rough lyrics set so far, dunno if that fits the purpose or not.

Here's my idea of how a verse would go, atleast the first verse, the idea here is less words.
Here's some example random lyrics to sing along the melody:
I, don't, Know, what, to, say, or, do
I, feel, so, damn, hollow, and, I don't know, what to sayyy.
It's a very simple Idea so if you like it feel free to expand it!

I wasn't sure if this was going to be a GMC related song or not - lyrically speaking. Based on the lyrics we have so far, it looks like it is not. Is that right?

Hey everyone,
Things are starting to sound pretty good from what I've heard everyone do so far
Anyway, here's what I came up with after noodling around for a bit:
Collaboration.mp3 ( 1.18MB )
: 278I wasn't sure where to go with the song, so I basically improvised a little piece over the intro rhythm guitar, which is the attachment above. Who knows, there might be some place in the song where it might fit.
Here is just the guitar by itself without any backing track:
Guitar.mp3 ( 1.18MB )
: 266Marcus will probably have to process this dry guitar sound in order to add some beef to it since I just recorded straight into my sound card with no effects at all.
Comments, criticisms (constructive of course
) are welcome, I'm open to change anything for the good of the song.
Peace
Well, I heard two nice little ideas there that I think could be implemented some way (but distorted avecourse!), first is 0:35-0:37, and the second is the last 15 seconds(not including the last 5 dead seconds.)

Cool, you can use some of it in the solo if you want. I'll start working on some more polished, and composed ideas tonight instead of just messing around with the D minor scale
Hopefully in a few days, I can get a few more ideas ready, and put them into Guitar Pro, so that everyone can see what's going on inside my head

thanx marcus, its great to hear that.... especially from you it´s an honour for me
you maybe recognised that my upload was only 24 bars...it´s because I am using the demo-version of gp5 so I can´t do more.... I had also some other ideas and riff-variations but I think for this collab it would be enough.. if not let me know.

Hey Steve,
Each solo part should be the same length as the test solo I recorded (which starts at 01:27 min) and it lasts about 14 seconds. So basically - just start playing when my solo stops, and then go on until the backing tracks ends.

Awesome job, great solo Marcus, I was thinking though maybe it would be more intresting if you the first 4 soloers solo on one key, and then the other 4 on a diffrent key, OR every soloer will solo for 7 seconds on one key and 7 seconds on another?

Hey Marcus,
I wrote some lyrics here as an idea if you want to make this a GMC related song. Basically it starts with the lyrics of the first verse -
:19 seconds start verse
Are you ready to Rock
Are you ready to Roll
Then grab your guitar
And get out of control
From Zero to Hero

So if you're ready to rock
then get in the game
:34 Chorus
Are you Ready
Ready to Roll
Are you Ready
to Get out of Control
:51 Verse
1:06 Repeat Chorus
1:20 another .wav sample from Kris
After the 5 guitar solos, fade out the song out with a cool effect on a voice that repeats the chorus.
If you don't like it, or if it it sucks, then obviously throw it out!
I would like to take one of the 5 solo slots if possible.
If you like these lyrics then I'll work on Verse 2. Before I did I wanted to throw out this idea since I haven't contributed yet. Let me know! Thanks - and what an awesome solo you did, as usual.

If you don't i came up with plenty of ideas earlier i'm sure i can come up with more

Hey Marcus,
I wrote some lyrics here as an idea if you want to make this a GMC related song. Basically it starts with the lyrics of the first verse -
:19 seconds start verse
Are you ready to Rock
Are you ready to Roll
Then grab your guitar
And get out of control
From Zero to Hero
Healty to Insane
So if you're ready to rock
then get in the game
:34 Chorus
Are you Ready
Ready to Roll
Are you Ready
to Get out of Control
If people are wanting GMC lyrics then I'd opt for that.

Awesome job, great solo Marcus, I was thinking though maybe it would be more intresting if you the first 4 soloers solo on one key, and then the other 4 on a diffrent key, OR every soloer will solo for 7 seconds on one key and 7 seconds on another?
Iluha, you seem to ONLY have great ideas!
I love the change of key-thing. Do you have any riffs thought out for that? What key do you want it to change to? tell us about it!

thanks Marcus. I think they can fit with the existing track. I probably should have put them together differently to give you an idead of what I meant - like this:
Are you ready to Rock, Are you ready to Roll
Then grab your guitar(or axe) and get out of control
From Zero to Hero,Healty to Insane
So if you're ready to rock, then get in the game
I'll write some more and 'll see if I can throw them in where I think they might fit and send it back. And of course it would be great if we got some others to add to it!
I've got a Heil Talk box that would sound cool on a lead or riff somewhere in this song. I'll use it for a lead and post it here for you to check out.

I think the bridge to the solo should go back to the begining of the song, bridging between the intro and the verse, like it used to be.
I'm trying to come up with a bridge to the solo, but I seem to have little to none creativity today, so far I thought it should be something quiet, maybe even acoustic, and prehaps with some soft vocals. If I think of something I'll let you know.

Ballistic, I hear you! and I also agree with you!
Nick came up with a riff that has similar feel as the intro, so I put that after the solo riff and changed the key to E. It's very critical to change the rythm this way, but I think it works ok. We get the key-change, plus it's a little "reminder" so the listener don't forget how the song goes

There's something about that riff that doesn't seem to fit. When we had it in the beginning of the song, even my girlfriend reacted on that it didn't fit (that says a lot). Maybe the best thing for the song would be to take that riff out completely, and come up with something different?

NOTE: All solo spots in the key of D is now full.

that bridge worked PERFECT, wow this gives a fresh sound to the solo, I really love it!
The change to the chorus is a bit odd, but it would sound awesome if the solo ends on the right notes, which in my opinion are some bends, im talking the bends at the end of Lavendell's solo, I think they will make a great bridge back to the chorus, so whoever gets to do the closing solo try putting those bends in the end!

This sounds really fun! I was actually thinking of joining with some vocals, is that ok with you Marcus?
Maybe I could record one verse and chorus as a break, with only bass and drums? What do you think?
Posted by: Iluha Sep 8 2007, 01:33 AM
I think you should do it Maria, I think we need to gather everyone's vocal ideas, and either choose between them or just use several of them.
Posted by: ballistic31 Sep 8 2007, 02:35 AM
I think it sounds great........I myself think if this is going to be a gmc song....the lyrics all should be sung by gmc instructors..............that would be great.and it would give great meaning and a feeling for the site itself like.........its more of a comunity than just you old average site ,, this is something alot better..musicians working with instructors ............would give it a sort of personal level,,,,,,,,but back to the song now we just need to map out the verse parts and corus a bit better to define it......and im thinking put a little more work into the lyrics part................so everyone grab pens and paper and lets toss some more ideas around......
Posted by: KRmachine Sep 8 2007, 02:46 AM
I have a suggestion for the chorus, if I may. When the line 'are you ready to get out of control' is sung the second time, don't pause after 'ready', just sing it in straight 8th notes, and then replace the melody where 'to get out of control' was with a guitar break with the same notes except the third note is a pinch harmonic. I don't know if you understand what I'm getting at, but it should sound great.

Marcus,
I've added a couple of things here. I used a Heil Talk Box, or as my wife would say "the spit tube" and put a phrase "Are you ready to rock" right where the crowd is. I like the crowd! I added a lead at 3:00. I'm not quite sure where a lead should go or how long it should be so let me know. (or if I should play one a t all) I messed up a little so please get rid of it of you don't like it or let me know if I can re-do it. (I probably should )
I also added some more talk box stuff at the end as maybe a fade out or something like that. If you want it, great, if not it's no sweat to me. I've got some other ideas for the lyrics too so I'll put that up shortly.

Ballistic,
I just talked to Otto (who signed up to play the bass). He says it's ok with him if you play the bass instead, because he's very busy right now and can't find the time for it. Can you figure out how to play it by ear, or do you need tabs or anything from me?

Andrew hey,
Its sounds great, the ending isn't too busy at all, it sounds cool, especially with the fade out. I like the fade out because to me it sounds like you could keep going and going with the solo, not saying that you can't The riff is cool too and i like how you play your solo in the same "feel" dunno how to say it, not the key...the solo sounds like it fits and serves it's purpose. Guess all the theory can pay off after all.
Props

Marcus,
I was thinking a couple of things about the song. One is that I think the 2nd chorus should be the same length as the first. Another thing is that we don't mention GMC anywhere in the song. I think that would be good to do because it then "completes" the story.
I don't want to suggest that we make the song any longer by adding another verse, however it might be something to think about in the event that someone unfamiliar with GMC listens to it and wonders what the song is all about. We might be able to squeeze it in if we shorten the second chorus, so I wrote another verse for you guys to decide:
VerseTurn it up and turn em on
We're rocking the place from dusk to dawn
If you got what it takes, we got what you need
Don't wait for tomorrow, come to GMC!
Something like that. Obviously, anyone feel free to add or change or even throw this idea away.

What about harmonies with the talk box...?

OK that would be no problem. I'll do that too. Might as well get some use out of it.

Can you send me the bass track - not mixed with the backing track?

I just realised there is a chance I might my be able to do a "high scream version" of the chorus - in best cases that could sound like a cross-over between Axl Rose and a mouse. On the other hand with Marcus mixing ability he could make it sound like Lemmy...!
Either way, these recordings could be used as backing (octave higher harmony) or maybe as the main vocal in a final chorus or similar.
I might give it a shot unless I blow my voice first.

Kris, I have to say - you sounded pretty uncomfortable / strained singing like this One particular thing I noticed was when you sing "control" as in "out of control" you kind of say contr-hole (which is fine, kind of an axl thing such as knock knock knockin on heavens do~owor, hey, hey, hey hey yeah ) so thats fine but it really kicks in and sounds bad on the second syllable as you seem to strain yourself on the contr-hole part it seems, maybe try extending it like so: "controooo-ol where the -ol is where you do a short raise in pitch or whatever. I'm not a singer!
Anyway, just some thoughts.

GMC theme song?

QUOTE (jeff @ Sep 15 2007, 09:25 PM)
Marcus,
I was thinking a couple of things about the song.
Verse
Turn it up and turn em on
We're rocking the place from dusk to dawn
If you got what it takes, we got what you need
Don't wait for tomorrow, come to GMC!
Something like that. Obviously, anyone feel free to add or change or even throw this idea away.
This looks great! I'm sure we can squeeze in another verse
Kris, do you want/have time to record another verse with these lyrics?
Here's the updated song, including Kris's "high scream chorus" (sounds awesome, btw
) and also Ballistic's bass!

If we should add that new verse - where should we put it? All ideas are welcome!

Great, just great! especially love Kris's new version of the chorus, sound just awesome, and Andrew's fade out solo is really breathtaking and leaves you wanting for more!

I think if we have a new verse it should just replace the repeated verse.

That brings up a whole other point of discussion. A Video! That's right Kris. You will need to break out the sunglasses. Except this time you need to polish up on the Axel Rose side to side sway move that he does. You can mix that in with the Curious Coincedence move and next thing you know... MTV baby!

Marcus, I miss your lead at the key change to E. I really thought that was awesome. I'm not too crazy about my lead though. Any chance you can put yours back in? It just fit that change so perfectly. If not, you can take mine out and put yours there or I can try to play it the way you did. (fat chance of that!
)
Posted by: ballistic31 Sep 20 2007, 04:44 PM
Wow that sounds great.........glad to see the bass file worked.....took me forever to get it loaded lol
Im trying to think on where another verse would fit ..... all i could come up with is.....It would sound realy good as a huge corus over the ending solo.....kind of set in the back ground .....sounding like a whole stadium was singing it all together at once........you know what i mean... maybee we could get a few people to sing it as a corus and just drown it with a huge chamber reverb.......with a long tail on it....detune everyone voice once or twice.........and send it thru something like ataries hormony maker........I think that would make it sound like a 1000 people or better............just an idea but it would keep the song still at 4.00 mins and it wouldnt go into the 10 min led zep song mode ......

About another verse, I'd be happy to make another one - however I am not really sure it's needed..?

Hey marcus it sounds great. But you took your other solo out i thought that was great. To be honest the only thing i don't like about the solo is my bit right at the end the rest sounds fine but too high pitched and stuff realyl so i'd say take mine out and put yours back in i've already got one in there so doesn't matter

Jeff, are you kidding me?!
If we had a "GMC degree" I would have given you straight A's for that solo!
Well, it's your choice but I'd hate to take your solo out of the song...

Wow man, really! thanks. Coming from you that means a lot.
Ok well then I guess leave it in. But I sure do like that solo you did. It just sounds awesome right where it was and complemented the key change perfectly. I think it would be ashamed to remove it.
What else do you think the song needs. Kris mentioned a talk box over the chorus part but I don't want to make it too busy. What do you think about that?
Posted by: steve25 Sep 21 2007, 07:14 AM
Kris i already have a solo in there straight after marcus's first one. My last one i don't know what i did when i recorded that but it's totally screwed up and to be honest it spoils the song. Yeah Marcus put yours back in my solo sucks to be honest lol
Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Sep 21 2007, 04:50 PM
+1 for the video - all the students playing solos could record a clip of them miming their part if they have the equipment! And Kris in his Curious Coincidence mode glueing it all together, with the occasional appearance from guitar tube
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Sep 26 2007, 01:56 AM
To get a little bit of "gmc volcals" without adding another verse - I tried recording some kind of outro. I am not completely sure how well this works with Andrew's outro - but I have a lot of faith in Marcus' magic mixing chops!

I feel the same. This was a great opportunity to play our guitar in a song with a feel from players from a state and a world away. The tiny solos I recorded are my best playing to date. Truly exciting thing to be a part of. I thank everyone and a "perfect mixing job" as well, goes out to Marcus.

yes i agree that marcus is the composer basicaly we all just kind of thew bits and pieces at him and he put it all together as it is before us and mixed it .....Im trying to think of a clever way to ask marcus to mix my cd for me when completed
..I got the mics down sound and all that,, but mixing is definatly an art..I must have 30 books im my studio. From hooking it all up to mixing ,,,,The whole buss and aux send this to route this to patch this and 20 hrtz that.....IM like isnt there just a darn easy button on the thing.
pretty soon im going to send a dear calkwalk letter......dear cake walk my cd is on its way......I skipped the trouble shooting hot line...........to get better results.........You mix it
ps thanks
