GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Jackson Slatxmgq3-6 Soloist

Posted by: Jeroen Apr 1 2014, 05:58 PM

I'm looking to buy a new guitar instead of my Ibanez rga72tqm. The main reasons are the pickups and the tremolo bridge on this Ibanez. It just doesn't stay in tune. I mostly play my Gibson Les Paul. But I also want a 24 fret guitar with better access to high notes and a good tremolo. Now I am searching for a guitar with EMG pickups and Floyd Rose tremelo bridge. I found the Jackson SLATXMGQ3-6 SOLOIST which has EMG 81/85 pickups and a Floyd Rose special bridge. It looks good. The only thing is, is seems very cheap, only 555 euro's here in the Netherlands.

Is it any good for such a reasonably cheap guitar?
Is the Floyd Rose Special a bridge that will stay in tune? (I don't do a lot of divebombs)
And what about the EMG 81/85, anyone who has experience with these pickups?

Hope to get some good advice or a review from someone who owns this guitar or a guitar with emg's and or floyd rose special.

Or should I go for the PRS SE custom 24??

Thanks

Unfortunately I can't talk about the Jackson but I have played a few of the PRS Custom 24 SE's and can definitely recommend them.

Seems strange that your RG always goes out of tune. If set up correctly I find them to be quite stable indeed!!

Also, if you're set on EMG's and the Floyd but really want a PRS then why not consider the PRS Torero? EMG and Floyd loaded:-

Torero with EMG's and Floyd, wow!! I didn't even know they existed. Sounds like I have to check this one out!!

Personally I like PRS more than Jackson but it's only my private taste smile.gif

About the Floyd Rose You will never know until You buy and use the guitar. Very often You can make the guitar for even less - like 250 Euro keep the tune with it's Floyd Rose. It's mainly about very precise strings stretch and locking. But of course sometimes it happens that it doesn't work somehow.

There are too many factors that create issues with tune. I'm afraid most of them need care of specialist. I do things like this myself (full service) and in many cases it's hard to help via net / phone / skype but when I have the guitar on my table everything becomes clear and I can quickly fix it.

This is subjective but I would never refer to a guitar model having tune issues. I would rather refer to a one, particular guitar smile.gif

They are well worth checking out, great guitar for the price. Will probably be a little more expensive than the Jackson but if you can find one and play it first you'll buy it for sure!!
Piotr has one and has used it in quite a few of his lessons, like http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Winter-Tune/

A good point Darius! I'm exactly the same as you, if I have the guitar here, in front of me, it's not usually a problem to find what needs adjusting to make it stay in tune.

I'm a very big fan of Jackson guitars but personally I would not buy this model. I don't know how to explain this better, but this guitar has a very cheap sound. For my taste it's unpleasant.
About PRS, this guitar made me a good impression smile.gif I usually don't like PRS because for me his neck is uncomfortable. But, this time if I don't have another option my vote definitely goes for PRS smile.gif

Also you can ask Cosmin more things about your PRS choice because he is PRS endorser in our country and he can tell you a lot details about many models wink.gif

Thanks Sensible Jones, Monica and Darius. I think I go and play both models. I like the sound of the EMG's and I think that a Floyd Rose is better than the standard PRS tremolo. But I have no EXPERIENCE WITH BOTH.. On the other hand the guy at the guitar store has a PRS SE Custom 24 in stock for 700 euro's and is willing to trade in my Ibanez RGA 72 TQM for a discount of 300 euro's. Too bad he has no Torero in stock for the next 2 months he says..

The tremolo on that Custom 24 is nothing like a Floyd, they're good but they're not a Floyd!! If you really want a Floyd I'd wait for 2 months until the store has a Torero for you to try out!

I found another store, 2,5 hour drive. He has one Torero left and is also willing to trade in my Ibanez. I'm going to check it out today smile.gif

SUPER CONGRATS!!! That's a killer looking axe!!! The American Made and Custom Shop soloists are AMAZING guitars but what they are calling a "Soloist" now is really more like a standard import jackson. Not a bad guitar at all to be sure, just a pinch misleading calling it a "sololist" imho. It's got a VERY fast neck, and nice jumbo frets and is one of the better off the shelf Jacksons you can buy today.

The PRS is really fine instrument from the looks of it and what I"ve been hearing. I don't know much about them though, Cosmin is the man on that!!! Either way congrats!!

P.S. WHAT IBANEZ DID YOU GET RID OFF?

Thanks Todd, I got rid of the Ibanez RGA72TQM. Which I had for 1,5 years. But since I bought a Gibson Les Paul I hardly ever played the Ibanez anymore, so it was time for something new.

Good call! The PRS is your best option of the two choices IMHO, especially given that your a les paul player. I don't think you'll miss the RGA smile.gif I was never a fan of the pickups IBBY started using after the MIJ series so not a huge loss!!

Congratulations on your new PRS, you are going to LOVE IT!!! I've never touched one of those with a Floyd Rose, but I did put EMG 81/85 in one of mine. They look great on there too.
