I follow St. Vincent for about a year and notice that she has a totaly different play style compared to most of the guitarist. Though she is not aka shredder, she manage IMHO to musically put together weird licks. I wonder if there is place for that at GMC. For one reason this could be a good learning experience: "... To break with the lizzards brain.." as she puts it, break sometimes with the standard way of playing and explore new grounds. :-)

Exiting to hear the replies,

Greetings,
Robert

She is a very creative guitarist and it would be great to cover her approach to music here at the site. I'm sure that we will have something soon.

I strongly recommend these Guitar Moves series:

That would be great Gabriel!
And the Guitar Moves series is fun and surprising!

Thanks,
Robert.

BTW: To get in shape, I started Funcky Rhythm at GMC and then try to figure out Birth In Reverse. Seems easy but my fingers wants to go another way ;-)

Cool song. Yes, I can hear some funk there, as well as some influences from Jack White, Black Keys and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It seems that his roots are based on blues rock, but she always goes for weird note choices.

These are some lessons that will give you tools to play in this style:

Yeah, she goes for weird note choices e.g. in the very first lead fragment of the intro of Birth In Reverse, the notes follow mainly E mixolydic but... She plays E(synth) D# B C# D C# B C#.. And then she does the funky thing on the B7 chord. But who on earth comes with the idea to put a D# in this row where one expect to play G# or E ? It will give a hell of a clash for some ears. I Like That! :-)

Thanks Gabriel for helping me exploring this style.

Start listening to jazz.
Her uncle, Tuck Andress is a really great jazz guitar player. She worked for him for years.
Most, if not all of the 'weird' chords or melodic ideas she comes up with (which I really dig) are really just more of a jazz thing juxtaposed into an indie rock context.
Also important to understand is that 1) the guitars she chooses, the Teiscos and Kents, have a very unique tone and feel and 2) she's very adept at utilizing effects like octavers, fuzzes, loopers and delays to achieve unique sounds.

Well that is recognizable Ken! Also because of the finger picking style that's an important part of the signature. Good and nice guitarwork! Thank you Ken for sharing and I will take your advice seriously, listen more to Jazz :-)
