Buying An Acoustic Guitar, I'm in the market for a high-end acoustic

Hey there GMCers,

I'm looking to purchase a high quality acoustic, between $1000-2000 US. I play acoustic a lot, mostly blues/fusion riffing by myself, and enjoy some classical pieces I've learned here. Also very much into Ivan's Delta blues (fingerpicking). Basically an acoustic for a lead guitarist. Cutaway is mandatory for hitting those high notes.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Kiz

I have a Parker P10E which is about $1500 and it is incredible looking and sounding. I will do a full review of it and take pictures over weekend if you like? If you want to splash out there is nothing better than a Parker acoustic in my opinion.

Thanks OC, I just checked it out - sweet looking guitar. What's the fretboard? Looks great, how does it feel? Fast?

-Kiz

Not a big Ovation fan. I like the feel, but not the sound. Don't know why, because I know they are very popular.

Martin & Taylor make aome awesome guitars (I have a Martin D15 and its sounds great).

At the end, you have to pick one yourself, but you should get some good suggestions on makes to try in this thread.

It is made of ivoroid. It is made of some of the most expensive woods and the electrics are by Fishman so you know you're getting the best. I love playing it. It has a beautifully smooth neck and I just love playing it. It's a joy to play and own. I'd definitely give it a try in a store and see what you think. It's different than what most people have and so it's even more beautiful to own. Better than having yet another Ovation or Taylor guitar.

Either Martin D-28 or D-35, or actually, if I had my preference, it would be, and the envelope please........

Gibson Dove

Because they are nice, a timeless classic, and so darn good looking.

About $2900 at Musician's Friend, I bet you could find one for $500 less.

If I were to spend $2000, I would go ahead and spend a little more and get one of the classics, Such as the Dove, or the D-35. Or even D-28. Which is a D-35 with a 3 piece back. Actually prettier, but th D-28 has been more popular.

EDIT: I would not get a new Dove, it has electronics. I would look for a used one, the original model. Don't know why they did that. So maybe get a Martin. My view. But I would not want electronics in my guitar. I would at least want to be able to take them out. Maybe a Hummingbird. Anyway, Gibson makes some nice acoustics, I have not looked for awhile. At least they used to, I assume they still do.

Thanks for the reply fkalich,

Must have the cutaway - love to solo way up there! Looks like a great guitar, though.

oh, missed that. You know, with a cutaway, it will never sound as good. Same reason Les Pauls sound better than the shred type guitars. This guy never had a cutaway, you really don't need that. Don't know why people want ot play upper frets on an acoustic much anyway. But my view, not everyone's.

Nice vid. I know what you mean about the loss with the cutaway. I just get frustrated frequently with my current acoustic and I've tested a few cutaways and like it. I'm willing to sacrifice.

I don't know very much about acoustic (and I can't really play hit well) but I love this guitars and this sound:

As far as I remember it should be an ovation legend

Hey man, I may have exactly the right thing for you. Well, it was the right thing to me.
Washburn EA-20 series. Be aware there are some variants inside the series (also in terms of price). I paid 1250 dollars for mine EA-20SDL (in Denmark). I don't know the price in US, it may be even under the price range you are looking for, but I I have to say I tried some more expensive guitars, but this one had exact the character I wanted: comfortable playing, amazing treble sound, cutaway, good looking (both the light and black versions), great to play even unplugged,

This is a video of me playing tears in heaven. Go for minute 2 and see how the solo can sound even on a noisy pub recorded with the sound directly recorded on a photograph camera... smile.gif

I believe Nuno Bettencourt used a premium version of this guitar, the Washburn EA-22B

Thanks for the responses guys - much appreciated. My top two choices are the Washburn E-20 series or the Parker P10E. I'll get my hands on both of them and hope for a perfect fit. I'm dying to get my hands on that Parker ivoroid fretboard though.

Cheers,

Kizaze
