Hey all,
I've been playing a lot of distorted blues lately. My father says to me 'Yeah, great - what do you sound like with NO distortion?'. I was like --- hm, good question. I rarely play clean. What the heck was I thinking? Now my father plays a 60s Gibson 335 through a Fender Delux Reverb with NOTHING else, and he can really make that baby sing. So I've been practicing clean a lot lately, which gives me a new appreciation for gain...

Anyways - here are two blues extremes clean and SUPER dirty.

Clean = Attached File  Blues_Improv_Iclean.mp3 ( 2.25MB ) Number of downloads: 642

Dirty = Attached File  Blues_Improv_II_dirty.mp3 ( 2.32MB ) Number of downloads: 510

Advice and criticism would be awesome. Especially the blues kats here...

Very nice.

I'm not real educated in the blues. But it sounds good to me. And thats what counts. Nice licks. Nice tone.

Made me think of a neat thing an old blues guy said to me. I was in a guitar store and my interest at the time was in huge space age looking racks of effects. I was new, didnt know much about playing, figured the cooler looking gear is what made the difference.

Anyway....

This guy is playing some of the sweetest sounding stuff I had ever heard. I dont know what he was playing or what he was playing thru, but when I asked him "Hey, what effects do you use?", I'll never forget his response...

"A twenty foot cord."

Sounds cool, although I appreciate the dirty version, there is much more 'feel' for me in the clean version. Am not an expert by far, but sometimes I got the feeling that some bends were a bit out of tune.

PS Would you mind sending me the backings, as I would like to have a go at it as well if possible smile.gif

I like clean version better, although it is still not clean, it's breaking up slightly.

I liked the clean better, it seemed to have a little bit of drive, I like this sound. I feel you were more controlled with the clean, but that is because of the backing, the backing you used for the distorted version is faster and maybe calls for crazier stuff.

A good comparison would be playing with the same backing track clean and distorted.

I actually prefer the dirty version. But then I love the gain, the gain is good. biggrin.gif

I hear some Gary Moore and Pat Travers in there.

I find sometimes when I'm playing - I have a melody in my head but I get too wrapped up in playing and I forgot to really REALLY listen to what's going on the backing track or with the band... When it's a slower backing I seem to be able to still think about what's going on... when it gets faster I get a little crazy hahaha. I think only practice and confidence can over come this fault.

In NY?, isn't that the place where most musicians come from. If there are guitarists, there's got to be some blues.

Oh I totally agree with you, however I live on the eastern end of Long Island - it's pretty rural out here. People who play guitar generally have no idea about how or what they're playing.
They give the usual excuse 'I play from my heart man, I LISTEN BRO'. I'll say something like: "Dude, do something in Amin and we'll jam out a bit" - "What is A minor?" - "GO ON THE 5TH FRET ON THE 'FAT' STRING AND DO A POWER CHORD IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH" (Yes I do realize this is an A5 chord) haha.
Then they have no idea at all how to solo, improvise, subsitute chords, try different voicings - all they can do is riff constantly at rediculous tempos doing constant tremelo picking.

Ugh, it's frustrating...

Up island and in the city there are a lot of amazing musicians - I need to move =)
