If you are into Metal, you may have certain expectations in terms of your guitar. Certainly, folks that listen to Metal have certain expectations in terms of how a guitar should look and sound. It’s often fun to be very original and use a guitar that is very different from what people expect to hear/see. However, if one wants to go for something more traditional in terms of picking a guitar for Metal, you have plenty of options. Let’s look at a few. Of course, as we have discussed, there is no such thing as a “Best” anything. But, that’s the quickest way to get across that we are doing a list. Perhaps it should be “good suggestions for those looking for a guitar to play Metal with”, but that doesn’t work quite as well as a headline. Let’s get in to it!

There is something of an “Arms Race” in the Metal community. Players expect guitars to be bold, pointy, aggressive, and stylish. Some Metal guitars are “Extended Range” instruments that add a 7th low string and even an 8th low string and if you really want it, you can get a 9 string instrument. Though quite reasonable to a bit pricey.

ESP EC-1000VA

First up, the ESP EC-1000. This is a les paul clone with some more “Metal” attributes.
It features a Tone Pros Tunomatic bridge with stopbar tail piece and a mahogany body with set-thru thin u shaped neck at 24.75 scale with an ebony fingerboard. It has some great features not found on traditional les pauls such as two Fisman Fluence humbuckers. These pickups are very nice and very trendy at the moment and have replaced EMGs as the active pickup of choice for many folks who like active pickups. No need to upgrade your pups after you buy your axe as it’s already been done. Also features a “Violet Andromeda” finish, which is a fancy way of saying flip flop purple as it changes a bit when held to light. Certainly not everyones cup of tea but very Metal. It can be yours for only $1,149.

IBANEZ RGA42FM

Next up is the Ibanez RGA42FM. If you are a fan of ibby guitars, this is a great way to get in to one without breaking the bank. Of course, this guitar is NOT MIJ (Made in japan) so it will get less love from many ibby enthusiasts and won’t have a good resale value. That said, it’s a great value for money and has some great features. It features a Meranti body under a flamed maple top with a bolt on neck at 25.5 scale with a jatoba fretboard (now that rosewood is getting way more rare due to regulations) It’s got ibanez quantum pickups which are not amazing pups, but adequate for any starter guitar. It’s a hard tail Ibby, so no Floyd style trem. It’s basically a nice looking starter ibby that would serve any aspiring Metal head as first guitar. At only $399 it’s bargain as well.

The LTDs are great instruments, and that finish is stunning!

Same goes for the ibanez's colours/top wood.

I don't remember who said it before but it was something along the lines of "if you like your guitar's looks then you will be inclined to play it every day"

It certainly helps to have a guitar that one wants to pick up! If it's attractive to you when you walk by it, you are more likely to grab it smile.gif Just picking a guitar up for a bit each day is a very positive thing imho. Not only for improving as a player, but also for just maintaining peace of mind. We live in very stressful times and music is a universal balm for the soul.
