What is the longest you spent trying to learn a piece of music.......and what was the piece of music????

I think I am a slow learner when it comes to this stuff. I am trying to learn "Still Hurts" by Marco Sfogli and it seems like it takes me FOREVER to learn some of these licks.....especially getting them up to speed. It seems like I see people posting covers and they learned them in a few weeks or so.......It takes me months to learn songs...... mad.gif

I'm discovering that its much easier to play like ME than like other guitarists...... laugh.gif laugh.gif

It's about the journey right????

Back to work.......some day I'll be able to play it...... laugh.gif

I am gay.

Vinnie Moore's Race With Destiny took me 20 days to play with no mistake. I think that was the longest one but the song is nearly 7 min.

I was preparing it for Guitar Hero competition. Probably spent 3-4 hours a day. It took 3-4 days just to memorize all the parts then I was polishing bit by bit

Hi Emir, I have the same problem when it comes to learning things from the beginning to the end.I guess I start something but get discouraged after some time/weeks because I see I can't play it at original speed. Should I learn the whole thing (like your VM lesson) and let the speed come or take some easier lessons which I can bring fast enough to speed (20 say biggrin.gif) I also try to push myself immediately with the metronome thinking that if play it the whole time at lower speed it'll stay that way.

If you give up then you lost the battle completely smile.gif Take 8 bars, play until you memorize and then start polishing it in tempo where you feel comfortable. Don't need to play up to speed imediately. After that learn another 8 and so on... It does take time bit it does pay off as well smile.gif

One thing you have to remember with Emir's story is that when he took 20 days to learn it he was already a WORLD CLASS PLAYER......not a mere mortal like myself...... laugh.gif laugh.gif

1 day in "Emir time"=1 month in "Monte time".......should be good to go in a couple of years..... laugh.gif laugh.gif

Tnx Emir I will follow this advice and try not to rush things. It seems that I always need a reminder that it is a long way smile.gif

I've got the opposite problem. Most of the songs I want to play I can play up to speed. It is just memorizing all of the notes takes such a long time. And then there is also the problem that tabs (however good they might be) could be slightly incorrect, and I'll be playing it wrong. That's why I now try to learn complete songs by ear, so I'm sure I'll be always right someday smile.gif

As said, it's the journey that counts ! About the speed, the way I do it when I can't reach the desired speed, is take the hardest/fastest part of the whole song, and play it with metronome until it is up to speed. At the point you get the fastest/hardest part completely right, the rest of the song shouldn't be a problem anymore smile.gif

Just my € 0,01 wink.gif

It took me four months to first play Sultans of swing fully up to speed. blink.gif

I did not practice for long time in every session but I did practice the song every day.

and yes. I had to do special metronome practice with the hardest sections (most of them in second solo).
Since it was only a few bars which I had problem it makes more sense to practice them a lot of times then the whole song a few times.

In the end it was very rewarding, because I got the sensation that I can play anything if want to go for it.

I've been working on eric johnsons cliffs of dovers for like 2 years, and still can't play it. It's been a part of my practice routine for ages in one way or another. Just don't have the chops I suppose.
