Steinberg products Cubase&Nuendo are industry standard for PC, and Digidesign ProTools for Mac. There are better and less better, free and very expensive. But as Ivan sad,more expensive is more better,so if good thing, a bout buying a soundcard,some of them comes with free software,so maybe you should think a bout that option too. Aug 4 2008, 11:33 PM	Instructor Posts: 2.279 Joined: 4-August 08 From: Argentina, Buenos Aires	I think the best way to make a backing track is making the MIDI (drums, keys, bass) in Cakewalk (I find it very simple but it could be any MIDI editor like Encore or Sibelius). Then I put the midi (Format 1) in an audio multichannel program like Cubase, Nuendo, Pro Tools (those are the most known, I use Nuendo). And when you have the MIDI tracks into one of these programs you can use a lot of samplers to make it sound more real. In order to do that you can use Edirol, or tons of VTS plugins, or you can connect Reason to the program (or work on Reason the MIDI). There are several programs to pick-up samples like Kontakt or some stand-alone samples like BFD for drums. I hope you find the post usefull.
