GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ ...or No Gloves At All
Posted by: HungryForHeaven Jan 26 2013, 03:04 PM
Ok, so I was talking with Slavenko and Gitarrero in the chat room, and we concluded that we needed a Manowar collab. Slav suggested the song Gloves of Metal as an inspiration, so I put a backing track together and uploaded to Soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/h4hgmc/or-no-gloves-at-all-backing
You are all invited to download the backing track, jam up a cool solo over it, record it (audio and video) and post the necessary files here no later than 17 February at midnight, London time.
The tempo is 76 bpm.
The backing consists of two sections, the first is in the key of Dm and the second in the key of Am; D minor pentatonic or D blues should work fine over the entire piece. For the more advanced, D minor works over the Dm section and A phrygian sounds cool over the Am section.
Files that you need to post - An audio file with your guitar track only - A video file - An audio file with your guitar track and the backing track mixed together (for reference)

As a new boy, I wonder if you can explain a couple of things.
Do you pick someone's guitar work that you like and then work more with them or do you look for a rythm guitar part or riff or lead or what? And everyone else drops out? How do you guys make your recordings? Do you all use something like gearbox line 6 stuff?
The newbie has to ask silly questions!

Hi Headbanger!
I'm not sure I understand your first questions. Do you mean what you would have to do if you decide to participate? Or what is usually done when starting a new collaboration? Could you please explain?
This recording has been made with Sonar (Digital Audio Workstation), guitar and bass plugged into the sound interface and modulated within the DAW with Guitar Rig 3.

Hi HungryFH I wondered how the collaboration works, although I was just interested..I doubt I am ready to participate in the big league! For example I noticed a few different people showed interest...Will you use everything that everyone does or do you all listen and choose which way it goes? I suppose it is discussed in the chat room? I like to know how things work even if I'm not taking part!

Oh, I see now what you mean. The basic idea is to use everything, or close to everything. The backing track can be looped as many times as necessary so that all solos can be put one after another over it. Sometimes, especially if it's a long backing track and many participants, the organizer may chose only bits of each contribution and glue them together over one or two repetitions of the backing track.
Also, there is no such thing as not being ready to participate. We do this because it's fun and because we learn from it, anyone can participate regardless of playing style or level. I challenge you here and now, Headbanger - jam along, use your Hendrix passion or let yourself be influenced by anything, come up with something that fits the chords of the backing track, and hit the REC button.
You just need to make sure that you can save your guitar track solo without the backing track, so that we can mix it in in the end.

Thanks HFH...That's what I like about this place GMC, so far...you guys rock! The problem I have, is how to get my guitar sound into a computer..I have just a practise amp and guitars and computers...nothing to connect between...hence, my question earlier about Line 6 gearbox soft/hard ware or something similar. Any suggestions? (low budget).

Hey Headbanger, I don't have any interface either. I use the line in port of my sound card to get my guitar's sound into the computer. I use (almost) all free stuff.
What you need is:
. DAW (Reaper is best in my opinion, its cheap and has a free 30 day trial without any limitations! http://www.reaper.fm/) . A 1/8" male to male cable . A 1/8" to 1/4" jack adapter . ASIO4ALL drivers ( http://download.cnet.com/ASIO4ALL/3000-2120_4-75724497.html ) . Free VST plugins (Poulin plugins are free and THE BEST out there, but you need to experiment with them to get a good tone http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/)
So you put the adapter on one of your ends of the 1/8" male to male cable. Put the adapter end in your guitar jack. Put the other end of your cable in the line in port of your sound card.
That should get your guitar's signal into your computer. If you're new to Reaper, I'd suggest watching some basics tutorial videos on youtube. After that, run Reaper, load a new track, arm it for recording, turn monitoring on and load your plugins to hear how it sounds.
If you need any help, PM me, Todd Simpson or Sensible Jones. They know a lot about home recording!

Thanks Sammetal...thats the sort of thing I was looking for...I found a post last night from mrroberts70 (who has also kindly just sent me a PM with similar suggestions to you) called 'audio recording help' which someone else posted a video which explains how to record stuff to computer...all very helpful...although some of the software looks complicated..but like anything else once you've learnt it.. Cheers for your help...Rod

Awesome, DG - I knew YOU would break the ice!
After long discussions with my fellow collaboration makers Slavenko and Gitarrero, we have decided to give you all one more week to post your takes. Thus you have until 24 February at midnight, London time to come up with something, record audio and video and post it here and/or send links to the files via private message. As you can see above, it is not necessary to solo over the entire track; only half of it is perfectly ok, too!

Thanks to H4H, Slav, and Gitarrero for putting this together!
Excellent sherd acrobatics by Todd with the Wah in full effect! Always enjoy your playing.
Christian's over hand legato technique... with Gloves no less!
Rob using and abusing his signature whammy. Like your style and playing!
Hungry with those amazing sounding bends and some catchy Phryg melodic lines,
Last but not least. Slavenko putting the pedal to the metal! The ending lines remind me of Kerry King.

Great performance by everyobe, hopefully we FINALLY managed to annihilate False Metal from the face of earth with such shredding bombs and crushing riffs.
De Groot made wonderfull neoclassical intro with his playing,
Todd melted everything on his way with his tremendeous speed , as usual
Christian, like your turkish style lick in this one man!!
Rob, very nice blues phrasing, and very unique tone
Hungry, very tastey licks from this Swedish neoclassical maestro
And hopefully Kerry King didn't ruined it all the ending
Hah, i almost choked from laughing when i saw that last photo

Ha, yeah after the intro I thought I should end the video with something Ben-related as well. And this pic will haunt him for eternity. We tricked him into showing us his shampoo long ago in the video chat and this was the result

Yeah, Hungry already recorded a outstanding backing, so i got an idea and suggested him to record some epic intro tune too ( which is in style of one old Manowar song which i won't tell you now )

Oh guys! I'm sad that I missed this one! The thread's tittle disoriented me a bit so I forgot about this collab! The final result is amazing guys. Everybody has done a very cool job over this one and I think that your initiative starting this collab is so positive!
Congrats and great job everybody!!

We'll forgive you this time... you were busy moving, playing live shows and trying to keep us in line with your own collabs and vchats. This will be it though, no more free passes or I'll send the boys over to your FaceBook page to handle this like they did with Ben.
Ben hadn't put up any collabs in awhile, yet he kept the "Instructor" title in his profile... NOT in our house!.... so the boys paid him a visit.... see how long it took for him to comply? He didn't want Krise and WeePee going all Frank Blake on his arse!!!

But now...be prepared for hilarious music videos on your facebook wall.
