When recording for video collab,I want to use my amp.Often I need to send file of my solo without backing track.I have a MacBook,Reaper and separate video recorder. Is the easiest way to provide all 3 files( vid, solo with backtrack, solo without backtrack ) to film solo while listening on headphones to backing track,ie not filming audio of backing track then in iMovie trying to add backing track as separate audio.Hope this makes

Fire up reaper
import backing track onto a track of its own (say track 1)
Create a new audio track (say track 2)
* mic up your cab - set the levels (for track 2)

note: you might want to put your mic'd cab in another room

Get your video recorder set-up
put on your headphones

hit record on your video-camera
arm track 2 - hit record

play to your backing track while recording to track 2

rinse and repeat.

*note - I've seen some people record the audio without the video camera, until they get the right take, then play back the track while recording the video and playing "air guitar" basically. Whatever floats your boat. I'm more inclined to endure the pressure of getting it right on camera smile.gif

lastly - use video editing software and import your tracks and sync them up with the video.

I'm sure one of the instructors can point you in the right direction on specifically how to do that.

Good luck!

Hey there tonyk
Sir Jamsalot is right on. I thought I would share with you some other things I have gotten Reaper to do for me that I find very useful.

I've saved a template for the guitar control track to load easily, your levels are set and I have also attached FX plugins to this track etc.

You can take the control track you have the backing track on and slow down the playback rate and keep the pitch. I find this very useful for learning new pieces or can increase the play rate and push your conditioning for speed and stamina. Select your backing track control and press F2. Midway in the window you'll see the playback rate box, default is 1.000000 just type in .900000 or what ever, you can also go 1.10000 or what ever. Observe the Preserve Pitch check box adjacent make sure it's ticked. If you slow down the beat you'll have to stretch the length of you backing track frame. Just put your cursor over the end of the frame till you get your Icon left click and drag to extend it till you get the notch in the frame that will be the end of the track, you'll see it. If you speed it up reverse the same thing or just let it play you'll see what I mean. You can turn off the snap to grid function by clicking the icon that looks like a magnet next to the lock icon in the upper left corner group of icons in the window.

If you want to focus on a part of the backing track to dial yourself in you can select the area in the track, loop it and play it till your fingers fall off.

Some times I have difficulty with the beat so I use the metronome function which over lays the track but does not record. I also use the metronome to give me extra time to get all my gear started as it counts down before play or record. Of course you can edit this time from your finished vid it's just something that helps me relax before it all gets going. You can turn the metronome function on and off by left clicking the icon or set the parameters by right clicking. You can change metronome tempo by selecting, Insert>Tempo/Time Signature Marker or Shift+C.

Reaper also has the capacity to put your vid file in just like your other tracks and sync it all and render a finished vid. It might pose difficulty at first but worth a look. You enable the vid track window by selecting View>Video Window or Ctrl+Shift+V.

Check out Reapers wiki files online. Open Reaper and select, Help>Documentation>Reaper Documentation Wiki. The Reaper Forum is also killer the guys are great just like GMC.

I'm not an authority just learning myself, just sharing things I've learned and find useful.

How 'bout shootin' a vid when you gig with your mate at the pup?

yes, that is correct. Actually what I do is in Cubase (or Reaper) is set my hot track (track 2) to stacking, then set up the loop indicators to repeat and I'll take up to 4 tries in a single session. Upside is you're warmed up by the second/third takes. Downside is you have sync the video to the right take smile.gif
