This actually seemed weird and almost surreal to me but, I have been listening to some bands a lot longer than I ever really thought. I have Blind Guardian's discography on spin for a few days since I've seen Marcus pop in and out of here, and I made it up to A Night At The Opera and it was the first blind guardian album I bought, looked at the release date of 2002 and realized I bought it when I was 12
Iron Maiden/ Sabbath/ Dio/ Priest - 12 years
Blind Guardian / Iced Earth / Nightwish - 11 years
I'm only 22, so when I realized that more than or just equal to half my life has been spent in the company of these amazing bands, it was weird, but incredibly awesome.
BTW, I bought "A Night At The Opera" because in Camelot (then to become FYE, now out of business) under new releases the album had a sticker that said "The most musically significant band since Iron Maiden". Had being obsessed with maiden for about a year at the point, I was sold!
Still to this day that sticker is true for me, BG is the only band that can even begin to rival my love for Iron Maiden So props to Marcus if he sees this.
That's funny. I have not always been into "heavy" stuff. I grew up listening to Christian Contemporary. I have a bunch of CDs I don't really want that bad because they are not "heavy" anymore. hahaha They used to be. When I was little, I knew nothing of metal. haha. Back in the day, I thought stuff like "Jesus Freak" by DcTalk was as heavy as it got.
Dumbest video production I have seen, but not the point. The guitar solo at 3:00 used to sound heavy to me.
I showed this song to my friend when I was like...10? and he said, "That's tame." He told me about this death metal stuff - I was like 'what are you talking about? How can this song be tame?' Years later I was browsing radio stations on my CD player and came across this death metal genre for the first time. I was like "What was THAT?!" It just sounded like noise to me. Exactly what the "old people" say.
Through the years I have went heavier and heavier in my taste of Christian Metal music, and have also mellowed in finding good, clean secular bands as well. I find myself currently liking the more melodic heavy stuff, cuz I'm just a melodic dude.
What's odd about that? Kids surely fancy bands like Metallica, Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse because of their skull / bloody /gore artwork. I'm also in metal from 5th grade , i had 11 years back then, haha

I remember that song "Jesus Freak" by DcTalk, quite good and catchy. Like AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Avenge Sevenfold, A Perfect Circle, Breaking Benjamin, Iron Maiden, Sevendust, Guns N Roses, Disturbed, Nine Inch Nails, Five Finger Death Punch, Linkin Park, Godsmack, Korn, MegaDeth, Zakk Wylde, and heavier bands too. Really anything with a good guitar. Seems almost every single band has something related around spirital warfare in one or all their songs - that's what I find odd. It's cool but shocking how music has change and affected us in different ways.

What was heavy back then seems lame in today's standards. Yet my parents would just call the faster/heavier/distortion stuff as noise.
Metal is the next generation of classic derived from the same roots . People brought up listen to it are highly intelligent but normally lazy if allowed to be, and very passive non-aggressive, which is surprising. I would say that's fits my personality.
So props to Marcus if he sees this.
