The Problem Pinky Finger!

Finally after weeks of practicing pentatonic solos ive realised whats been holding my progression up, my pinky finger.

Ive been playing for just over 6 years and 5 of them have been spent only using 3 fingers. For a few months i been trying to incorporate my pinky finger into my playing and now it seems only natural to use it all the time. Problem is, its making my lead playing suffer. For example when i fret a note with my pinky finger it often rings out a dead note and also it doesnt feel like its got quite the accuracy as the rest of my fretting hand. I really need to sort this out for my playing to progress.

Can anyone reccomend any exercises for me to try and to get round this? Thanks!

Try doing some ring-pinky trills. They help build up your pinky strength quite a lot.

There are many series for finger exercises on GMC. Any of them would be useful. I would advise that you involve pinky in everything that you played before with 3 fingers. Start slowly and get your pinky "up to date" smile.gif

Agree, and adding 3nps shapes will really boost it up as well,
for pentatonic 2nps licks you can do a lot without pinky
but when you play 3nps licks you just have to go with pinky more! smile.gif

Cheers, gonna have a go a 3nps patterns, i can do the trills n pull offs no problem, it more the fact that the accuracy it out of sync with my picking hand i think.

I guess doing 3nps patterns will improve accuracy and strength?

Here I leave you an exercise that helped me a LOT when I had a strenght problem in that same finger.
You should play the exercises in all the strings and only with your index and pinky finger.

Thanks for the help. Im already noticing a difference purley by doing a few of these exercises with the metronome. One thing i noticed though is that when im using 3nps patterns my little finger slightly touches the strings below it.

Will this go in time as the finger gets more strength is is it normal? It feels really difficult to bend it so as to avoid hitting the strings!

Hey,

If you've only been playing in the minor pentatonic scale, it would have been almost impossible to develop strength in your pinky, since, as you said, you've only used 3 fingers. I suggest you move on to playing the natural minor (aeolian) or major (ionian), or any other mode for that matter, where you have 3-notes-per-string patterns. Just improvising in these scales will automatically give a stronger pinky. Of course, if you want to max out pinky power, do Muris' lesson, and do trills in general.

I actually stumbled upon a video where John Petrucci talks about fingers strength and speed... Check it out, maybe you'll learn something from it too ! smile.gif

You should pay extra attention from 4:16, where he starts mentioning "dexterity between [the ring and pinky fingers]".

Hope it helps ! smile.gif
