I use PSP Vintage Warmer most of the time, and Waves Renaissance for mastering sometimes as well, but there are a lots of useful compressors around.

FOr free ones, here's a useful list:

Hey Rated Htr, I'll recommend some free ones that i've obtained from kvr. No, I've never used them for guitar because I've never really recorded guitar much, but I've used them for other general recording purposes like synths/keyboards and vocals.

BlockFish: It seems very simple at a glance, but it has a nice number of options, and the sound is pretty decent in my opinion
http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?...2&subItem=5

KJAERHUS CLASSIC Compressor: Another good, free option that I use from time to time
http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php

Those are 2 that I like and use, as far as free compressors are concerned. They are free, so there's no harm in trying them out. Of course, kvr does have a enormous amount of free compressors that you can try. Hope that helps a little at least.

peace

Most sequencers also come with a couple of compressors as well. In addition if you want some excellent quality compressor plugs with a hardware front end then take a look at Focusrite's Liquid Mix DSPs here. Puts much less strain on your pc then a standard software plug-in and the emulated compressors are good.

Focusrite is awesome but it is pricey as hell - 1000$ for EQ and comp! ohmy.gif I wouldn't mind having this baby at home tho, but I would be happy with UAD project or extra packs as well.

Hey jer, all those things do sound very useful. I've seen that recording lesson forum here is pretty quiet. I'll start a thread soon with links to many good recording technique sites. I have about 6 years experience of home studio recording and I have a ton of bookmarks in my browser with many good articles on recording, eq, compressors, mixer setup, and all that good stuff. They've really helped me out a lot through all my years, I'll share soon.

Peace

There are quite a few recording lessons on the site Jer. There's a sub forum lead by me here. Whilst I haven't added any lessons for a while I haven't finished posting lessons either. Specific lessons focus most on Reaper btw as it is uncrippled shareware that anyone can download and use.

There are also lessons by Juan Valero here and Kyle Logue did some video tutorials as well. Andrew btw wrote a very nice blog about designing and building his own home recording studio.

Also there is an lot of information spread about on this forum and others where people have asked for more specific questions - including mastering, use of some plug-ins, mics for guitar recording and so on.

Chances are many of your questions/issues have already been touched on at least here at GMC smile.gif

Thanks Tony. I'll check them out.

Scattered forum stuff is nearly useless as the search function is junk. What is it with forum search engines?

I'll check those links though.

Thanks!

If you are using Cubase, you can use it's stock compressor, it's under Dynamics>Multiband Compressor. There's a preset for drums, kick, snare and whole set if I'm not mistaken. I've used it before, gives good results. You can always adjust the preset to your needs of course.

What I used to do with it is make a group channel and put the whole drum there after mixing it. Then insert this multiband compressor there. It does the job.
