Hi everyone!
Here is my first attempt to start a collaboration.
This should be a great way for anyone involved to put into application your modal knowledge.

Here's how it works..
The song is in A and goes through all the modes in order:
A Ionian,
A Dorian,
A Phrygian,
A Lydian,
A Mixolydian,
A Aeolian,
A Locrian

Tempo is 100bpm.

Download the backing track, and record a lead over one of the modes you pick.
There are 8 bars for every mode. You'll hear a drum fill before each change. Start recording your lead at the begining of the bar you picked. Once all the leads are received I will mix everything together. Should be interesting!

I need 7 people to participate in this experience.
Post a reply to this thread stating which mode you want to solo over and if you want to do it with a clean sound, or distorted sound. (Once all 7 participants are there, we'll record with the sound that the majority picked)...

You can't pick a mode that's been already picked.
First one to post gets to pick first.

Once all the spots are taken, I'll let you know which sound to use (clean or distorted), so that we can have some kind of consistancy in the song...

The recording should be sent to me in mp3 format. I only want your guitar part without the backing track...

So there we go!

Please sign up only if you know you can record this... If you are not set up to record, don't worry.. More of these will follow I'm sure...

Lets say I pick Mixolydian, does it mean I can use the A minor pentatonic scale for instance, and mix it with some mixolydian, or only use mixolydian? This might be a silly question, i r st0pid biggrin.gif

Well, its modal, so use of minor pentatonic would kind of clash, so yes, I think you should use a mixolydian scale, but its Davids collaboration so he can rule definitively smile.gif

Thanks Ezra, I'm sure Dave will be cool with it - theres still Ionian, Aeolian, Phrygian, Locrian and maybe Mixolydian to choose from if you don't like Dorian smile.gif

Does your PC make noises? Can you watch videos etc with sound? If so then you have a sound card.

You need a cable from your guitar to your soundcard and then you should be able to record - or you can by something like a Stealth plug which is a very simple interface designed for guitar.

Yes, Audacity would do it, but reaper might be more suitable for this project.

I never used the Stealth but its advantage is that it is very simple to set up and use. You can get a lot more complex, but this would be a great way to start.

Even though A minor pentatonic would sound very cool on A mixolydian, let's keep this all modal.
If I were to play on mixolydian, I would definitally use some mix of minor pentatonic with the Mixo notes, but let's stick to the mode only because having rules will force us to play differently..
Great question though.
Are you in?
