... hurt so much ? dry.gif

I caught a fist in my ribs at Karate 2 days ago.. it wasn't a hard punch, only a glancing blow that was an accident. However, it hurts like hell when I cough or sneeze (sneezing is the worst). I don't mean to make it sound big because it's nothing really, but it makes me appreciate and understand how horrible it must be when people break a rib. Has anyone here ever had an injury to their ribs ? Tell us all tongue.gif

I guess it's because you can not really relax that area, you have constant movement when breathing.
You have a lot of small and some larger mussels in the thorax, trying to protect the area, and then they start hurting.
Then you also have some large nerves running just along your ribs.

I heard that a lot of elite rowers have stress fractures of the ribs.
Fortunately I never broke any bones (or maybe my little finger once did)

Yeah, I guess so.. and also there's not a lot of flesh covering the ribs so when the ribs move (when breathing etc) it pushes onto the bruised area of your muscles.. I'm assuming so anyway biggrin.gif

Maybe you broke one? It doesn't actually have to come completely off when it's broken but just have a crack to it.
The good thing with ribs is that they stay put and heal by themselves.

I cracked my dads rib once with an uppercut to the body. ... huh.gif While we were practicing boxing, all in good spirit tongue.gif He felt the blow ofc but the pain only came the day after. The rib had a crack. After between 1-2 weeks it was healed.

Now maybe you learned that you should block blows at Karate practice biggrin.gif

Ah Rib injuries.....they are certainly not fun.

I know someone that broke a rib once, wasn't a happy chap. If you did break a rib, you wouldn't be able to breath, lift your arms, or even walk....

They are so easy to bruise and damage, when i used to do Muay Thai i copped a few good ones, takes about 3 weeks to fully get over bruised ribs. I think its cause there is so many nerves muscles and bone in that area...and when breathing it expands so when there is a bit of damage, even minor, you really feel it.

Ben, tell the 9yr old girls you do karate with to go easy wink.gif

mine was only cracked I hate to think what a proper broken rib would feel like, youch!! theres not an awful lot they could do for me, I just had to keep it strapped up.

I rather like the "lots of beer" remedy though! biggrin.gif providing you dont drink too much and end up falling over and making things ten times worse lol

I ones got a crack in a rib when playing Ice hockey. I remeber i was chasing a puck all over the ice to score on the empty net but i was too late so i throwe myself in order to prevent the icing call and then i went into the boards and hit my shoulder.

I remember that hit like it was yesterday. The moment i hit the board i was gasping for air and i could barelly get any and that was kind of scary. I couldent move so i got to ride an ambulance to the hospital to get an x-ray and they said that i got a crack in the rib.

Anyway when i got home i had very big problems moving around, i mean getting out of bed took several minutes i couldent bend over so i couldent pick anything from the floor. it was not easy for me by that time.

Several weeks later i still had problems with it and the problem remember most was that when i walked i leaned my body to my right and it lokked really wired.

This happened in 2002

The answer is, most probably, due the diaphragm & abdominal muscles trying to their job to keep you alive. I had a rib injury about 10 years ago playing beach volleyball. I dove for a shot (totally missed it of course...but the dive looked cool) & landed on my ribcage. After a few days of pain, I went to to Dr. & he said that we could take an x-ray but whether it was bruised or cracked, the remedy was going to be the same. And the remedy was ..."just give it time!" Not a great answer when it hurts so much to breathe. Not to mention the pain killers didn't kill much of the pain. Sure hope you feel better soon!

Wow, kinda seems like you have a "black cloud" hangin' over you recently. You might consider wearing one of these for a while. laugh.gif
