Hi!
It's been years since I last format my laptop's harddrive, so it's definitely beggining to feel a bit slow at startup or when opening programs etc. For some reason I try to avoid reinstalling windows (I guess I'm too lazy to reinstall all the zillion programs I use...), and I'm thinking of trying some kind of registry cleaner / defragging software. As these programs can sometimes cause more trouble than good, I wonder which one would be safe to give it a try. (Windows XP) Thanks in advance -------------------- Guitars:

Ashampoo Windows Optimizer is a really good one. It's got all the tools needed.
Just search for it on www.download.com This post has been edited by Trond Vold: Aug 23 2008, 03:56 AM -------------------- Guitars: Schecter Stiletto Classic, Jackson SLSMG, Ibanez RG-380 Japan, Gibson Les Paul Studio

Hey Fran,
Ill recommend the following: *CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) -for general cleaning and removal of obsolete registry junk *Defraggler (http://www.defraggler.com/)-good free and very small defrag tool *ERUNT and NTREGOPT (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/) - ERUNT backs up the registry and allows you to restore it and NTREGOPT optimises your registry. Both are amazing! *Advanced System Optimiser (http://www.systweak.com/) - This one isn't free, unless you download it illegally (which I'm not condoning) but is very good in many areas including registry cleaning nevertheless. *Window Washer 6.5.5.155 (http://www.webroot.com/En_US/consumer-products-windowwasher.html) - This one is not free and used to be my primary recommendation for privacy erasing and PC cleaning, but now I go with CCleaner because it is free. Still very good program with IMO a good interface, and the ability to easily customise it to clean the tracks of a wide variety of programs. These reviews are also very good and help you to evaluate a wide range of products. http://registry-repair-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ http://pc-system-utilities-software-review...tenreviews.com/ http://data-backup-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ Hope this helped, and anyone with antivirus/spyware/registry problems, message me and I'll try and help you when I can. -------------------- |

I use free regcleaner for registry, and Diskeeper Pro for defrag. Bare in mind that you always have to monitor (and backup) what you erase from registry. It is pretty sensitive and fragile database.

Awesome input!, many thanks, I'll check all this programs and see what I can do.
Hopefully things will go fine, but just in case I have to ask: I will do a backup of the registry just in case, but I have a couple doubts in case things go wrong: 1) (Worst case scenario) If I somehow erase something I shouldn't from the registry and the computer doesn't load windows, then I guess I won't be able to restore the registry backup, right? 2) If windows loads but things don't work correctly and I restore the registry with a backup, will everything be fixed again? -------------------- Guitars:
