GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ What Type Of Guitar Strings Do You Use?

Posted by: The-Levy Sep 5 2007, 12:14 AM

I use 09 DR Coated black beauty's, or Elixirs 09 too. Thy just feel soft and sound good to me.

Posted by: Robin Sep 5 2007, 12:19 AM

I think there have been a similar topic before smile.gif

But anyway, I use 0.10 Elixir.
Becuase they NEVER get dirty or rusty. I tried some cheaper GHS strings once, they got full of filth the second day... And then they snapped. Elixir hold for a long time compared to other strings I've tried.

I usually use 9-42 d'Addario but I'm thinking about using 10-46 because perhaps I change the tunning of my guitar tongue.gif

i use earnie ball regular slinky's ( 10 - 46 ). They have a great feel, not too high tension and they dont rust as easy as most other strings. I used to use elixer's but their too expensive and they are really irritating when they wear out as the coating starts to come off ...

I use 9-42's, but I don't stick to a particular brand (as of this moment). Right now however I'm using Ernie Ball Slinky's
Edit: typo

My main set is DR Tite Fit 009 042
I got package of 12 Slinky sets from EB few days ago and I putted one on guitar tho...
They are ok by now wink.gif

Im using Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 09-46.
My favourite right now so far.
I tested some Gibson strings, S.I.T strings and D'addrio and for me the Ernie Ball ones were the best, because I liked the feeling of the string and the sound.

Posted by: strat_daniel Sep 9 2007, 05:48 AM

fender super bullets, 9-42 Nice and durable, like the sound and feel

Posted by: SDMF75 Sep 9 2007, 05:55 AM

I mainly use DR's Color coated but recently tried the strings @ http://www.webstrings.com and they are holding up really well. Sound nice and bright too. Whoops, forgot to mention that they are mega cheap too! $3 a pack or less.

I tried these because a few people said they were excellent. They sounded pretty good, but not as good as what came with my Schecter when I bought it new. So I checked on their website and found a Q&A thread that indicated they install GHS Boomers 10 - 46 on all their 6 string guitars. I put some in just yesterday and they sound incredible. Now I'm wondering how much of it has to do with your guitar type and what they set it up with. This guitar was set up with these strings so maybe it has something to do with it, I don't really know. I do know that most people have indicated that they love the Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's, but they don't sound that great on my guitar. Not as good as the GHS Boomers anyway.

Posted by: Gen Sep 9 2007, 06:45 PM

I use Dean Markley 9-46 strings.
Because they have "more power, tone, sustain and longer life!"

Posted by: Fsgdjv Sep 9 2007, 06:53 PM

I use 010-046 Elixir, and I love them, even though I'm thinking of going over to 011 and tune down to D.

Posted by: The Uncreator Sep 10 2007, 10:02 AM

I use Dean Markley Lights (.09-.42) for tunings E Standard to D standard.

For anything C Standard or Below i use Dean Markley Heavys (.11-.52)

And since i tune to Drop A Every now and then for that, i use Dean Markley Extra Heavys (.13-.57)

Posted by: muris Sep 10 2007, 10:59 AM

Holy, many drop and low tunning here biggrin.gif

Posted by: Codyrg Sep 10 2007, 04:55 PM

Rack up another DR user smile.gif

I use Hi-Beams 11-50 for D standard tuning. I've tried a lot of other brands, but keep coming back to DR.

It's all opinion, but I think that everyone should at least try DR...I used to play other brands to death and beyond, but I kept hearing abou how amazing DR was, tried them....never went back biggrin.gif

I've tried lower than D before, used to be a drop C junkie! I tried C standard, it sounded...odd. Not really "too low" just, I'm not sure...didn't feel right I suppose. Tried C# and that still didn't gel with me, so back up to D and it just sounds perfect! Love my D standard!

Choosing strings can be really dry.gif huh.gif blink.gif and unsure.gif
because even if you buy a new set, you don't know how long were the strings in the store. So you could choose a really great brand perfect for you wub.gif but the strings would suck and you would never ever try them again. Except for D'Addario because they're in that special bag.

And even if the strings were fresh when bought it's kind of difficult to remember how they sounded in the beginning. wacko.gif (Well, I record how they sound "fresh from the store").

Posted by: visi0n Sep 13 2007, 03:58 AM

I use D'Addario 09-042

Sounding good, perfect strings, and you can bend them nicely.. smile.gif

Posted by: daimeon Sep 13 2007, 07:09 PM

D'Addario 10-48,ECG23 Chromes,Flat Wound
Really great sound.

Posted by: MkC Sep 14 2007, 12:19 AM

I am using Gibson Brite Wires 09-42

Posted by: leedbreak Sep 14 2007, 10:26 AM

Wow, I have used GHS boomers forever, never have even tried another brand, hum, maybe I should

9-(I think it is 42). I can buy them for 5 bucks a set and have even found them at Walmart before. My shector had terrible strings on it when I tried it out in the store and it played like a dream then. But once home on went the boomers and I was tickled pink.

Posted by: Goliath Sep 14 2007, 11:00 PM

I typically use D'Addario XLs 10s but recently I've been exploring other strings, Got some EB Slinkys (10s) and they sound about as good and don't seem to have that "break in" period the XL's do. Plus they just feel better. I might try the hybrid slinky, I've heard good things.

DRs were trash when i used them, I used them on my string thru schecter and half the coating on strings 1-3 came off feeding it thru the body and teh rest of the coating on 1-3 came off after about an hour of playing. I changed out the strings almost immediately.

The elixirs played great on my guitar, BUT they sounded horrible when I plugged in. The Elixir continues to be the only acoustic string I'll buy, but it messes up my sound too much for my electric.

Posted by: superjudge Sep 15 2007, 06:14 AM

I usually go with Eagle 011-050 Yngström Stainless Steel; I recently started testing Harley Benton 010 Valuestrings, which are really, really cheap (about 1 EUR for a pack), but so far works out ok (they feel a bit wimpy compared to the Eagles I am used to, though).

Cheers,

johan

I go to the guitar store and ask for a pack of 10s - i really cant hear the difference.

"what make would you like?"

"surprise me"

EDIT: spelling

I had checked the Schecter site and found a Q&A that said they use GHS Boomers on all new guitars. My guitar sounded great when I bought it so after I figured out what they used I put some in and they sound better than the Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys I had on.

I use Carvin 9/42 on the Carvin just because that is what they set it up with and sent me like 40 sets of strings for it, I have EB super slinky 9/42 on my Ibanez and a set of Dean Markley mediums on my acoustic

Posted by: Rawk on Sep 15 2007, 10:12 AM

EB super slinky 9/42

gotta love the eagle...

Posted by: MG66 Sep 16 2007, 03:42 AM

D'Addario 10-46

Posted by: sanders4617 Sep 23 2007, 02:52 PM

I currently have some kind of Fender strings (.09) that were given to me on my guitar.. and they sound pretty good, the only thing was after a couple of days, they were already really dirty and stuff.

The last strings I used were Elixir .09 and they lasted me a LONG time and only at the end did they start getting dirty. Definitely worth the extra money if you ask me.

After Elixir.. I guess Ernie Ball would be my 2nd choice. They last a little longer than the Fenders that are on my guitar right now.

It probably wouldn't matter how long they lasted if I had the money to buy new strings all the time, but I don't.

I use Gibson 08's on my Les Paul, and on My Cort X i use d'addario 09's smile.gif

Personally i find the ultra light 08's totally lush to play on! cool.gif

How thick strings are good for standard b or c tuning do you think?
I intend to try it out on one of my guitars (ESP eclipse)
It now has 0.10 standrad d tuning on.

Posted by: Goliath Sep 29 2007, 02:12 AM

I have 10's on my Schecter and keep it pretty much in dropped D tuned down one whole step (what is the quick name for that tuning?), they feel wayy too loose, esp the E string. I used to have 11s on it and it wasn't quite as bad. Non muted passages on the low strings sound way too sloppy since the strings are all over the place. I'm considering bumping up to 12s next time I restring.

Posted by: ZakkWylde Sep 29 2007, 02:25 AM

Ghs 10-60 or ernie ball 10-48; 11-48

Posted by: JVM Sep 29 2007, 03:54 AM

I'm going to buy some elixirs and see how I like them. Right now I use D'addario 10's.

Posted by: Resurrection Sep 29 2007, 04:09 AM

D'Addario 9-42 at the minute.

For the classical guitar, I use D'addario J46, always in tune mainly.
When I want to get more colorful sound, I use Augustine Red Regal. Regular Augustine strings tend to be out of tune, but Regal ones are nice.

First let me say that I am a beginner player so you guys that have a lot of experience with guitars might think its not a legit question. I changed a while back from the 9's that came with my Fender to 10's. There was such a dramatic change in tone from the guitar that I could not imagine ever putting 9's back on. It was like. 'Oh. Thats what the guitar is supposed to sound like'. I notice that most everyone here is using 9's and I figure its because of the style of play but don't you feel that you are losing a great deal of the tone your guitar can actually put out by using 9's? I take it its a trade off between bend ability and tone? Just a question.

Posted by: botoxfox Nov 11 2007, 07:24 AM

I've messed around with both 10s and 9s and I can't say that I noticed any big differences in tone. So I just prefer 9s for the easier playability...

Posted by: muris Nov 11 2007, 07:24 AM

Gauge of string is truly individual matter.
But sure to make yourself satisfied with tone and comfort while playing.
Per example, many have asked me do I use 011 on my MM Axis.
That's sound of guitar plus preamp etc...it's 009 all the time. wink.gif

Posted by: stratman33 Nov 11 2007, 07:31 AM

i use ernie ball hybrid slinkys 9-46.

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Nov 11 2007, 07:52 AM

I use 10s for exactly that reason, and after practicing with them for a while I find my bending to be more precise because there is more to push against, although I am sure you can get used to any gauge. I can;t usuefully ben them more than 3 semitones, but I don;t see that as a problem - I'm sticking with 10s for now.

Posted by: Mike Seddon Nov 11 2007, 07:55 AM

I've used Ernie Ball Super Slinky for years - no complaints - great strings and very cheap on ebay.

Just switched to Ernie Ball hybrids. Also nice.

Mike

Posted by: tonymiro Nov 11 2007, 09:41 AM

I use 10s for the same reasons that Andrew gives. However one of my heros (Allan Holdsworth) uses 8s on some guitars and up to 11s on others. So it's largely both a question of personal preference AND what works with the guitar wink.gif . Find what works for you and your guitar is my best advice.

Cheers,
Tony

When I started playing I was a Boomers fan for a bit. Didnt like it as much because of how it sounded.

My fender is guaged with 9-42 bullets. I recently changed it for DR 10-46

I recently changed my strings for Schecter by Elixir 11-49. I love it so far, I think im sticking by it for now on. They last long, super fast, and great tone.

Posted by: Paul Coutts Nov 13 2007, 03:05 PM

on my Ibanez I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky .09's and on my LTD I use Ernie Ball Regular Slinky .10's
if I can't find Ernie Ball, I'll easily settle for D'Addario, however, I think Ernie Ball are the best by far IMHO

Posted by: Goliath Nov 14 2007, 02:07 AM

It depends on the guitar. On any 22 fret guitar that's not getting alternate tunings (like it has a FR and is a pain to change tunings), they get 9's.

My RG has a locking trem, so I use 9's on it as well. The Schecter has 10's and I use it for all alt tunings, and will likely put 11's on it.

I use Ernie Ball strings. I might give DR strings a shot next time though.

After playing with EB's for a while from switching for D'Addario XLs , I was sold, because EB's didn't have that horrendous break in period that made my tone to go crap. I used to play my guitar when it was restrung like a man possessed, just getting as much grime from my hands as well as bends in in as short amount of time as possible. EB's also don't seem to corrode as much as the XLs did, as I've got pretty sweaty hands.

Elixirs played magnificently, but they made my tone way too bright to play the kind of music I like, but it's the only string I'd put on an acoustic.

The one set of DR's I had I put on my String-thru schecter and 1/2 that coating came off on the EBG strings so after about a half hour of playing I had 3 black strings and 3 silver strings.

Posted by: Tele-ho Nov 18 2007, 08:29 PM

Schecters come with GHS Boomers 10-46 from the factory, sound and play so nice I havn't switched to another brand yet.
I have also been using them on my Tele for quite a while now ... no need to switch.
