GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ 2000-2010 Bands

Hi Gmc'ers
Looking back in time I enjoyed the 80's with maiden,judas, Ozzy,Dio,Helloween and a long Etc...
The 90's with Metallica, Megadeth,Dream theater, Symphony X, Guns & Roses, Red hot chilli peppers+went through all the instrumental ones Mac Alpine, Tafolla,satriani,Vinnie Moore,vai.....etc...
The thing is since 2000 I haven't found so many bands that I like a lot. Maybe the new turn to Nu-Death-power-metal or whatever label you want to put in it doesn't work very much for me.
So the only bands I found which I like are Circus Maximus and the 1st 2 albums of Adagio and thats it. Maybe if you post your favourite band let's say from 2000-2010 may help me to find some others.
So far the winners for me are CIRCUS MAXIMUS

In 2000-2010 we had the Metalcore, Gothenburg Melodic Death, Nu Metal, Power Metal, NWoAhM and the Thrash Revival. Slipknot, Linkin Park and Korn are great examples for good Nu Metal Bands. Killswitch Engage, Bullet For My Valentine and the other metalcore bands revived Metal and made it easier accesable for youngsters. In Flames, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom and others developed a perfect mixture between death metal and melodic parts. Lamb Of God, Machine Head and Mastodon strike back with high quality Heavy Metal from the US in the footsteps of Pantera. And bands like Evile, Trivium and Warbringer go back to the roots and bring back the Bay Area thrash sound. Last but not least with Hammerfall the great Nwobhm times were revived in the genre of power metal with great bands like Rhapsody of Fire, Sonata Arctica, Angra or Sabatton...

...I Don't think it was a bad decade for heavy music at all!

Off the top of my head... these guys aren't "heavy" as some but i still really enjoy it.
Lost Prophets, Incubus, Sevendust, Alter Bridge.

I think this has been a way better decade for guitar than the 90's. Nothing against it but the whole grunge thing
kinda killed guitar for a while!! Wasn't cool to play solo's the more you sucked the cooler it was?!
Your tone had to be terrible and out of tune to have the "sound". Even though metallica and the like where happening at the same time (thats where i was at!!) The grunge bands were really bing pushed to the forefront.
I started playing in the 90's but collected old mags from the 80's because the mags in the 90's always had Nirvana or something like that. Look at the mags now back to shred, technique and all of that!! It's great.

I think the music in general that has come out this decade has given guitar a good boost again!
And there's plenty of good bands out there in my opinion.

Most of the metal (Power and Death Metal) that has been popping up recently were from the 80's.

There are a lot of great Metal that came out the last 8 years.

Of course, as ZakkWylde said, Thrash metal had been booming again since Brazil and Bay Area Thrash bands had been popping up by a thousand lately. Not just any thrash metal, but 86 Thrash ala Exodus, Kreator, Slayer, and even Sarcofago kind of Thrash.

Death Metal had been slightly monotonous as of late, but bands such as Origin, Hail Of Bullets, Flesh, Coffins, Frightmare, Arghoslent, and Drawn and Quartered had been the new bands to keep this genre alive and violently flailing heavy riffs.

A lot of 80's and early 90's bands from Death Metal are still making great album today. Dismember, Grave, Bolt Thrower, Immolation, and Obituary all came out with nothing but a spectacular release in the last year.

Folk/Viking Metal also boomed the last 2 years or so. Eluveitie's album Slania is my album of the year. Its catchy, heavy, and full of folk instruments to keep anyone interested.

Prog is not my forte, but I think this genre hasn't impressed me in the last 2 years.

Yeah, Metal really suffers from being boring, monotonous, and even terrible the last 10 years or so, but its still worth checking out because out of 10 terrible bands that I find in a week, one of the them is bound to be an unstoppable force for there upcoming years.

LAst 10 years? I don't really know, most of the music I listen to is metal from the 90's. Some of the stuff Zakk Wylde mentioned from the 00's is infact from the 90's, like the whole melodic death metal thingy, etc. There has been some good black metal from the 00's, but not from norway this time. Drudkh, Wolves in the Throne Room and Deathspell Omega must be my favourite black metal bands from the 00's.

Otherwise I think most metal has become really really s*****, like the death metal is mostly super technical and insanely boring. Obviously there are some bands that still are good, but they are mostly bands that existed in the 90's.

Post rock is probably my favourite type of music from the 00's, even though that's also music that saw the light in the 90's it's grown more in the 00's. Even thiugh the genre is absolutely flooded with clones and therefore I can't stand most of it now, there are still some great bands.

Despite anything else bad that might have happened this last decade, Opeth and The Sword have kept the metal torch lit for me Of course many older bands are still kicking, and there's lots of great new bands that I think just haven't found their groove yet.

Now, if we want to get into other genres...

Not so many bands that started having success 2000-2010 really got me. I would mention Firewind, Evanescence and Nickelback...
But well, we still have some time to make some good music before 2010

Hmm...Opeth, Mastodon, Nachtmystium, Disfear, Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, High on Fire, Trivium, Protest the Hero, Between the Buried and Me, there are lots, you just gotto keep an eye out(or should I say ear?). I really like being a music fan in this decade.

I've gone through just about every popular metal genre, from nu-metal to deathcore, and frankly, only one genre has really been able to pull me back no matter what. It combines the beautiful, orchestra-like elements of Post-Rock with the brutality and force of Doom Metal. Yes, the little blossoming artform known as Post-Metal. Although its deep in the underground,(well, was), some of you might know the most popular and successful bands from the genre, such as Isis, Cult Of Luna, Pelican(early), etc. Though its roots could be traced back to the band Neurosis, who first began as a hardcore punk band, but they became more experimental, so they started mixing industrial-like riffs with melodic passages together to make a powerful, yet tear-jerking sound. From that time in the late 90's, few bands from the hardcore scene tried to take up on the sound, and many simply copied it.

However, in the early 2000's, Post-Metal really became defined, especially through Isis's second full-length, Celestial
and Cult Of Luna's self-titled debut. Those bands took elements of Post-rock and fused them with Sludge/Doom to create a new, unique sound. Each band in this genre has a unique sound, each to call his own, and really its a big breath of fresh air for metal. Its grown quite alot n the few years its been around, but its really got potential to REALLY be big.

The bands that really dominate Post Metal:
Neurosis (still the kings) Rosetta(Most Potential out of all the bands to be the best), Cult Of Luna, Amenra, Tephra, The Ocean, Omega Massif, Year Of No Light, Callisto, Back When, Tides, and Mouth Of The Architect. And yes, my post might be a little long (i might have gone a little overboard, lol) but I couldn't resist the chance to inform friends of Post-Metal

How the heck could I have forgotten STEMM?!

Cool topic. My favourites from this ERA (2000-2010) are Alter Bridge, Muse (they started in the 90's but profesionally in this decade), A Perfect Circle, Black Stone Cherry. I also like Foo Fighters and Incubus but they first album have been realised in the mid 90's.

All most all music I listen to are from bands who already where around before 2000.
Only bands I can think of that I really like, and which are from after 2000, are Braindrill and Dethklok.

Ah, by the way. I did not include Audioslave and Velvet revolver, because I don´t consider them as 2000-2010 bands, since they are most formed by former band mates...

I have had a hard time locating any new bands that interest me these days. I have been looking back toward older bands that I missed in the past. Radiohead and Children of Bodom are two that I recently got heavy into and until now was unfamiliar with. I did see Velvet Revolver a few times and their first tour promoting the Contraband album was great. I saw them in the Avalon in Boston, a small venue. The next time at the Worchester Centrum a much larger venue, and they were awful. Also, they played on late night with Jay Leno shortly after that and were horrible!! I was hoping to see big things from them but drugs and attitude always seem to get in the way.

As far as the whole Emo or hardcore scene there is a song here and there that may catch my ears but the overall style is just not for me. I am glad to be a product of the 80's and the 90's I remember the radio and MTV (before it became RealityTV) flooded with bands like Soundgarden, Pantera, Nirvana, Megadeth, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, Ozzy, and many more. That to me was a great time for music. Two words..............headbangers ball!!
