What s up everyone

Well after i red Pavel's post in fretdancer69's topic i wanted to find out more on sweep and if im not doing it right.He said play it slow but that kind of confuses me.I recorded a few different sweeps .First one is from Pavel's lesson.Second is just something i play.The last two are what i think of sweep when i here it.I just felt to be sweep it had to have that sound which i cant explain i guess sweep sound laugh.gif Well lets here what you think and dont worry about hurting my feelings give me a 0 if you like just be honest and base it on the technique.Same with you Pavel,your a hard one to please ,which i like because im here to get better. so get as blunt as you like.Im here to improve thats the point of this being posted.

Just a quick tip,try some sweep licks with less hammers and pull-offs.
That way you'll get better articulation and accuracy for right hand,and better link between hands tho.
I can make a lesson with those kind of licks if you wish. smile.gif
But great job you've done by now!!
Cheers smile.gif

Well to be honest it's a techique that i have started and stoped for atleast a year now just because it confuses me what exactly is and isnt sweep. tongue.gif I have been taking it seriously the past month and basically just trying to keep my left and right hand in same exact time.Thats one thing i know for a fact you have to do to sweep.I guess i said i was bad at it because it's confusing.I have ALOT of work to do to get it down i just wanted to here some feedback and figured it may help me improve.Also wanted to see if Pavel would give me a -1 laugh.gif No offense Pavel cant wait to here what you say if you post. smile.gif

Ok i listened to it:

First sweeps i heard are 3-string sweeps and you have problem in your right hand when going from 2nd to 3rd string and back up. Also a better muting would help you but it's a matter of feel and you'll get it with time. There is no way to explain it - i did explain in my lessons as good as i could think of in words. To be honest i learned to properly mute (not everything - but 3-string shapes) in the last 3 months. It's just - something clicked in my head and i realized how to properly mute 3-string shapes. But you have to feel it - no camera angle and no text explanation can help.

Those 2 5-string shapes you played sounded pretty good but there is a tip: you play the shape once and you stop. To make a good, flowing sweeping you should practice 1 shape in a row for like 10 times. So, play the same shape up and down for 10 and more times. What i mean is shown in my 3-string sweeping lesson, last video where i play that E-minor 5-string shape, it's at the very end of the video where i gradually speed it up. That's what you need to do when practicing sweeps.

And the last part of your record is 3-string shapes again: let me say this straight, ok? you are talking about speed and you can't even hit correct notes! Do you really think you can master sweeping like that? I don't think so! You know - there is no shortcut in learning! It's like trying to teach a baby to talk! He HAS to grow up to at least 1 year to start talking. You can't teach the baby to talk being 3 months old. This is the same thing! Imagine your sweeping technique (and all the others) like a baby and yourself as a teacher! You'll have to teach your hands to sweep very long just as i did! Yes it may be boring! To me it wasn't! I wanted to learn to sweep so badly that i was too excited to think about boring or interesting things!

It will be great when Muris makes a sweeping lesson, than you can look, compare, take something from him and from me and in the end you will learn it! I am still learning to sweep, i am watching sweeping videos, MAB, Rusty, Luca, Fareri and i take something from each one of them!

Shredmandan - i'll leave this post at this point and you feel free to hit me with the bat - of course that won't help your sweeping but at least you will feel better! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Ask if you want to know!something else!

Greetz!

Dont worry i dont want to hit youwith a bat laugh.gif I just know your a hard dude to please and straight to the point.I like that about you or i wouldnt have asked your opinion. biggrin.gif You are a awesome guitarist and i have looked up to YOU since i got here back in Feburary.Hope you didnt think i was saying anything bad about you ,because i wasent just refurring to how you can be hard on your students laugh.gif It's a good think though because you saying ''great job man maybe try and practice more but great"" wouldnt have helped me at all.I have total respect for you.You have mannaged to become way better of a guitarist than me and i think i have afew years on you.I will get your stuff down though promise you that.I think Murris putting his spin on it along with what you have already done is going to rock.Not that what you have did isnt good enough just evey person you can get to help is better right!Only question i have for you is how do you know i hit the wrong notes on the very last part?That part wasent from your lesson.Yes i did stumble on it but just curious how you knew it was the wrong notes?

Pavel=Dont throw a brick at me it wont help ,,just give me your advice laugh.gif

A clean sweep can be easily recognized and so can a "dirty" or sloppy sweep. You can easily say when somebody is playing with total confidence in what he is doing and somebody who is just trying to guess the notes. If you want that exact passage done nice and clean you better slow down and learn it note by note so you know EXACTLY what you want to play. Than you can work on speed and cleanliness if you know what notes to play. Make sure each note is played to the end, and especially the last note of the shape because from that note you have to switch to another shape and people often forget about that note but it's very important to play it to sound clean. Also a better muting control will help you greatly!

I hope Muris will do it soon so you can have more resources from more players to learn from! I also have more sweeping lessons incoming but first you must learn these in order to play the new ones.

Also what sounded strange to me is the rhythm in your sweeps but the main reason it may sound strange is if your notes have different length. So make sure each note of the sweep lasts the same. If it's 16th than make them all 16th.

I am glad you like my lessons! Thanks!

What you said about me being a hard dude to please - it's truth! But that's what brought me to where i am! I am still not pleased with my playing and that's what helps me to practice on and harder! smile.gif

You are still doing great job! At least you are not de-motivated and you didn't give up on sweeping! Keep rockin'!

I couldnt help but notice shredmandan, Did you crack your fingers or something right before the end of the mp3 ? tongue.gif

And another thing I want to say. I think alot of people here are going a little to fast with sweeping. I by no means am a sweeping pro . But that sweeping lesson that everyone has been uploading them playing, ( the one with the huge legato run in there ) Is alot harder then the 3 string sweep lesson. And until youve mastered the first 3 string sweeping lesson isnt it kind of pointless to go onto the next one if you know its only going to be harder ? huh.gif

well, the reason i started with the Etude, is because its more melodic for me, sure, the 3-string lesson sounds awesome, but not like the Etude. smile.gif

I have been working with that lately, leaving the hammers and pull offs off, and instead doing a tremolo pick action. I am thinking maybe the same thing, mastering it that way will get you better articulation, it seems that it forces you picking hand really to "dance" on the strings, very fluid. If you do pull offs, well the motion stops for an instant. Is this what you are talking about?

edit: also, you do get a sharper sound with a pick, more so than you will ever get with a pull off. maybe that is more what you are taking about. but i still think there is something to what I was saying, keeping the pick motion going at all times without a break (due to pull offs or hammers). If nothing else, it develops the ability to hit a quick tremolo pick motion, which is a good thing.

Play this shape for example:

E||--19-15-------------------------15-19-19-15-------------------|
B||--------17-------------------17-------------17----------------|
G||-----------16-------------16-------------------16-------------|
D||--------------17-------17-------------------------17----------|
A||-----------------19-19-------------------------------19-19----|
E||--------------------------------------------------------------|

All 6-tuplets - just like the rest of the lesson!
