Hey, I was wondering, what bridge do you have on your guitar that you use in the lessons that use the whammy bar? cause my strat gets out of tune every time I use the whammy bar a lot. and my guitar teacher said strats aren't ment to do that, and it wasn't just my guitar.

Your teacher is right.Just about all vintage style tremolo bridges will go right out of tune when trying to whammy. You really just about have to have a floyd rose style bridge that locks in tune,or you can do like Marcus and just bend the string back in tune for each note(which songs way to difficult for me but somehow he pulls it off biggrin.gif

I agree and disagree with Shredmandan`s post, I`ve added a Strat to my guitars after only either having Ibanez or Jacksons with Floyd rose trems.

I`d have got one a lot sooner but the tuning issue with the wammy bar made me hesitate, anyways, I eventually just bought one, and applied a tiny bit of 3 in 1 oil to the bridge (where the strings sit) and a very tiny amount of vaseline under the head nut in the grooves, and up to now have no major issues with tuning on the Strat when using the wammy bar. Using the 3 in 1 oil is a tip that Fender give on their website smile.gif

For sure you cant beat a floyd if you want to give it loads of abuse smile.gif

just to add that low quality machine heads can also be part of the problem with staying in tune (if one don't have locking nuts)

Hi. You can also try getting a graphite nut installed. I have read that Malmsteen tongue.gif has his vintage trem set-up, so it never goes out of tune. How true this is...no sure. If you want someting that stays in tune very well, but does not take up the room of a Floyd...tyou can look into getting a Wilkinson trem. They are a lot like your Fender trem, but they really stay in tune. I hope this was some help. Good luck. smile.gif

I assume you mean you are confused by the bending it back in tune part. This just means that as the string loosens and falls out of tune, the player bends it to a point where the tightness of the string is brought back to proper tuning with its neighboring strings. Although this is tough when playing individual strings it is really impossible when playing chords. Maybe Marcus can add some insight.

Hey smile.gif

I assume you refer to the Vibrato lesson - part 2. Is that right? That guitar has a Floyd Rose.

All my Strats have vintage style tremolos though. I use the whammy bar every day, and have no troubles. I think the most critical thing is the nut, and I usually put some graphite to it (where the string lies) to make the string slide easier. I'm sure the 3 in 1 oil that Smells mentioned works great as well (haven't tried it though).

make sure your springs are loose enough, else your bridge will be "floating" when it shouldn't be.

Edit: obviously your strings also need to be fully stretched for your bridge to work as supposed.
